Sigh. My parents had a nice clarice cliff bowl. They used it to feed the cats. It broke.
If only they could have predicted that idjits would buy tacky drivel for lots of money they'd have cashed in.
( And my Dad thought about buying Apple shares when he was at the UK launch of the first apple mac back in the days. He could have retired by now. )“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

When I cleared the old house, nearly everything had to go to the tip, not even good enough for the charity shops to be interested in. No "names" of crockery, just bog standard cheap old plates. Although there was a coffee pot set that they'd had "for best" in the 1970s and only came out when they had visitors.... my sibling kept that, which is good. Although it'll never be used.0

Our cats drink out out of a deliciously tacky big name bowl too. It tickles me pink. I'd never have paid for the bowl.0 -

My sister bought my Dad a cereal bowl for Christmas, which looks like a dog's dinner bowl, and says, "MAN" on it. He likes it a lot....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I've been reading the thread. Camping is okay, as long as you get someone else to do it and give me the five star holiday with the hot and cold running servants...
( Note: PN, this is not a posh alert; I didn't say I actually got to go on the holiday. Alas.)“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

I haven't done a will, not much to leave really as no house or expensive paintings etc.
The only thing would be the children and they are fast growing up and would be very capable of saying where they should go...James is an adult anyway, so he wouldn't count.
The only thing that could possibly complicate things and make it more sensible for me to do a will is that I am named in my parent's wills as a beneficiary for a third share of their house and any monies in savings (approx 80k at current prices), so maybe I should.
Sue, you really need a will. It doesn't make any difference that you've nothing valuable to leave. LNE had more debts than assets, but his will was still crucial. When you die (and especially if you die while your boys are still living with you) then somebody will have to sort everything out. They'll need to make arrangements for the boys - both legal and practical, empty your house and decide what to do with the contents, talk to the council about ending your tenancy and arrange to give the keys back, decide what should be done with the possessions that you do have etc etc. Unless you want all this to be argued over by people with conflicting idea of "What Sue Would Have Wanted" then please please please write a will to appoint an executor or two.As for the boys, they wouldn't opt for their father and he wouldn't really want them but they still have a good relationship with my ex mum in law, my parents and my siblings...oh and they all have local godparents who understand them.
Just because they would opt for something doesn't mean you don't need to put it in your will. Write one now appointing some of the relatives you've mentioned as guardians, and preferably referring to a less formal but more easily updated document detailing what provision you would like to be made for the boys if you are not able to look after them.I'm brutal about chucking thigs out that I neither like nor have a regular use for. When my dear mother died, the house was cleared in a month and I kept remarkably little. Now that Mr Bugs won't be coming home, I'm turfing stuff out, but feeling marginally more guilty even though he would neither understand or know what I'm doing. If it wasn't for my two hobbies, I could live in a very small space!
Um, Mr Bugs won't be coming home?? I didn't know that. What did I miss. When did that happen? (Feel v bad for not having kept up properly.)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

I might have walked in one 3-star hotel in my life.... never stayed in one. Never even walked past a 5-star hotel I bet.... not even on the other side of the road0 -

If its any consolation I was reminded this week that five star ain't what it used to be.
There are better than five star hotels now, which seems kind of odd. But no odder than the inverse I suppose, like when the bottom 20% of people are on poverty even if 80% have to choose food/heat or if over ninety percent have mobile phones and rooves over their heads.
The way we classify stuff is kinda hilarious really.0 -

My aunty visits her husband daily at a place costing over £1k/week and he doesn't even know who she is. It's wiped her out, nothing left as he's been in 3-4 years now .... and she had it all before she met/married him too.
It's not good visiting people who talk nonsense... you just want to cry really.0 -
Bugs, I'm so very sorry to hear that. We've had some of that sort of thing in my family, so I know a bit about how draining it is for the family. If we NP can be there for you in any sort of way, we're here any time.Do you know anyone who's bereaved?
