My Granny's first name was Margaret. Her husband's sister was called Margaret. Both her husband's brothers married women called Margaret. It seems that it was overdoing a good thing, really, especially for Grandad's sister, who had 3 sisters-in-law called the same thing as her, and his parents, who had 1 daughter and 3 DILs, all called Margaret (and all with the same surname, obviously)!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
We're going for a daytrip to the next nearest bigger town to do some retail therapy (well I will be doing pretend retail therapy aka window shopping :rotfl:)
Boys back at school tomorrow!
ISaac's back tomorrow, too. Phew!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

There was a Rabbi who died in Israel recently who had over 1,000 descendants. He'd only had one wife, too, it wasn't as if he'd married one woman after another and worn each out with child-bearing!
He was an only child, as well, which strikes a weird note.
The number was achevied, I think, by incredibly early procreation, as well as lots of it. Just before he died (aged over 100) one of his great-grandchildren presented him with a grandson - imagine your great-great-great-grandad being alive when you were born!
How did he accumulate such a multitude of offspring? Simple: He had twelve children, ten of whom reached adulthood, and nearly all his sons and daughters, along with their children, married very early and each had ten or a dozen children of their own. Do the math − in such a family you reach a thousand before the age of ninety.
There is no similar phenomenon in the world. Women have multiple births at a young age in many other cultures, but the only one where they also have the benefits of an ultra-modern health system in which the vast majority are live births, the children surviving childhood and carrying on in the same fashion, is Israel.
While in Haredi circles, siring 1,000 is considered a symbol of immense and unique virtue, outsiders can only see this is a sign of utter backwardness. Talk of family planning and birth control within the Haredi community is tantamount to heresy; how can anyone view zar’a chaya ve’kayama − literally, living and existing offspring − that do not stop uttering the words of the Torah, as anything but a good thing?

10 children per family is not uncommon in the ultra-orthodox Jewish community. The girls often get married at age 18 to 20 and have a child every other year. Birth control is only considered appropriate if/when there are health concerns. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

I have many cousins. Irish Catholic parents. My mum was 1 of 7 and my dad 1 of 6 and they all had children. I am only in touch with a small number of cousins...my sister is in touch with loads..but she lived in Ireland until she was 10 so she has a shared history.
DD really values some of her cousins and is very close to them . I think this is because she is an only child...my SiL 3 offspring and one of my sisters sons who is now sadly deceased. With two deceased cousins she would have 11 in total.0 -

My uncle (since passed away) was contacted by a son he'd lost touch with in Australia (I mentioned it in a previous thread). The guy's my double.
Couple of years older and on the other side of the world. Great bloke and glad I finally met him but I so nearly didn't.
So, turns out I've got 38, not 37. He's my only Jewish cousin incidentally.
I once overheard somebody taking about visiting their half-cousin and I really had to go away and think about what that meant!:oThere is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
I expect I have a lot of cousins - one parent is eldest of five and the other youngest of nine. I think there are four cousins on the smaller side (which would make 6 including me and my brother), but no idea about the other side. Not seen either side of my extended family for probably about 20 years.0

I'm starting to look at FTB properties and am tempted by one, however according to the Zoopla data on recently sold similar sized properties on the same road the asking price is laughably optimistic.I've never used Zoopla before- surely sellers know potential buyers will check it?!
I find rightmove easier for looking up recently sold prices. A lot of the listings you can also find the photos for too (which I find quite interesting!). If they are actual sold prices, I would think zoopla is accurate (as surely they are the land registry figures?), if it is the 'estimated value' I'd take it with a big pinch of salt - last sold price x average change in area = inaccurate! Doesn't take into account what state it was previously sold in etc.0 -

I think I have 3 paternal cousins plus some 'American' have cousins I don't really know a lot about then maternal ones I have I think 8 although they are all younger enough that I don't know them that well (my mum was eldest and started 'early' at 21 or 22). Then there are the 4 siblings with so far 5 nephews/nieces but 2 siblings have not got started yet and are still young enough. However we generally seem to mix with siblings rather than cousins but then we are all very widely dispersed.I think....0
