Watched Stelio's hoarders tonight and the woman struck a nerve with me. I know my hoarding started after my own little boy died when he was born.

Ironically, when I was looking for my christening shawl to bury him in - I went on a mad rampage and threw loads of stuff out of the attic window. I found it, but after his funeral I went on a bit of a shopping spree and spoilt his brother and the girls.

Then I know I spent too long online every day - I'd do the bare essentials of housework but instead of sorting things the kids had outgrown they just got put to one side. As more and more stuff came in - the piles kind of grew bigger and bigger! :(

Pudsey I am so sorry to hear that, I think hoarding is a totally logical response although it may not seem that way to some.

I'm really not sure what triggered mine...just as I am not quite sure what has triggered me to start clearing out. :D

I'm enjoying it though, even though I can feel old feelings creeping in every now and then....its like telling a naughty child off when they creep back. 'No you DON'T need that!':rotfl:

Stelios definitely helps, seing people with similar problems cope helps me to cope too.

So...update on my progress before work this morning is one large plastic box of random junk and paperwork decanted into a much smaller shoebox, lots of recycling and shredding gone out.
It needs going through again but I can do that another day :-)
Sorry to be posting a lot today but I wanted to share all my little breakthroughs

pudsey I'm really sorry to learn what happened, it must have been a terrible time for you, and something that must be so difficult to live with.

I did feel for the lady in the programme last night. Because she was in a small home, everything seemed to be on top of her. Much more so than the man in the big house. He may have had more stuff, but at least it could be spread out a bit!

You have to love Stelios. I like it when he goes to the house for the first time. Even though he must have seen hundreds of hoarded houses, he always looks rather wide eyed when he first sees what's in the home!

I've done that in the past - had one go at a pile of paperwork to reduce it, then return in a few days or weeks to have another sweep to get rid of more. Sometimes it's just too much to do all at once.

  • And burning is more pleasurable than shredding. Plus, if you have some sort of burning receptacle, you can load it up over the course of a few days, ensuring there are spaces for air to move through. And then it's gone.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

Pudsey, thank you for sharing about such a difficult time of your life.
JoJo - 3 stone - wow well done.

I've spent a very enjoyable hour simplifying my household paperwork: emptying 2 packed lever arch files of house records & finance related stuff.
An 8 inch pile to shred and the streamline remains now in two see through box files. Nice and easy to access and drop new stuff in to. All old statements/utilities bills/house insurance and everything gone. Invoices for stuff done on the house, old quotes and old dead boiler bumpf ,gone.

I'm probably going to get rid of the files/dividers and plastic wallets.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
  • I have ground to a halt. My house is unbearable again, my best friends cancer op didnt work (they cant remove it with out taking whole voice box) so its radiotherapy now, Ive been in bed ill all week so no work = no money and one of my new baby kittens (highlight of my life at the mo) collapsed this morning and is currently in the vets on a drip. Hopefully she just has an infection but she may have Portosystemic Shunt which is a liver condition or wobbly cat syndrome which is a neurological birth defect.
On top of this I took out insurance on the kittens but there is a clause saying they wont pay out if they get ill within 14 days. I took out the policy monday. the bill is £290 so far........
