Am at my parents' place today and have done the shopping and also decided that the airing cupboard (very small very overstuffed cupboard), needed sorting out.
Parked Mum who's a bit overtired, on a chair by the cupboard and dragged everything out to discuss and sort and re-organise neatly.
Result is superb; linens and towels sorted and accessible. There has been a cull of Flannel Mountain, with a good dozen balding and religious efforts to go into textile recycling.
Two attractive and never used single oven mitts (gifts to a household which uses doubles) are set aside for donation, as are some bedlinens. Some things not fit for resale are being taken for ragging and I have had the satisfaction of ripping up some very thin and aged cotton pillowslips for metal polishing rags.
A bag was found containing Dad's old work shirts (he's been retired for years) all laundered and ironed. Close inspection revealed only one in fit-to-donate condition and 7 have been de-buttoned for ragging and the buttons are in a wee ziploc bag for donation.
I have one injured and one fragmentary bedsheet to take home to repair (I volunteered, I like this sort of stuff) and Mum and I are swopping a king sheet for a double sheet, as she finds the king to big and I'm the opposite. Both plain white cotton and same brand so only difference is the size.
All in all, a substantial amount of textiles being re-homed, ragged or donated, as appropriate, and the cupboard in a good and usable conditon. We're both pretty tired but are pleased with the results.I've allowed the old lady to retire to her armchair with the newspaper. Might take her a cuppa, now I come to think of it, it's a good day's work from a hoarder............

pigpen, I'd love to help! I can see carpet. I look forward to another update later.
We will hopefully be back in our own bedroom tomorrow night. I can't wait.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0 -
on the plus side - microwave is at recycling centre as is a plastic mop handle that has been in my car since the last recycling centre run where it got forgotten, and a few outgrown clothes to cs.
on the not-so-plus side missed putting the bins out due to bank holiday rescheduling, and still cannot source any garden waste bags, so it's piling up. never mind, have worked out how to build a wormery from the decking I am removing so once I get a dry day at home hopefully I'll no longer need to take garden waste away (the decking is fine, the struts it was laying on are rotten through and were causing penetrating damp in the kitchen, thank you charlie dimmock et al)
BT engineers here for 2.5 hrs so far, they've popped off for lunch and to collect a.n.other person to help. I could see by his expression when the first engineer got here that re-installing the BT line was going to be tricky (we are situated in a weird position), but I wasn't expecting it to be a 4 man, multi-hour job - they are not slacking in anyway, but i'm very glad I'm paying a flat fee!:AA/give up smoking (done)0 -
oh - missed your post pigpen! you are doing a grand job, I'm amazed you have time to do anything:AA/give up smoking (done)0

the 6 binbags have been taken to the charity shop.. my lazy boys were kicked out the door with them! .. ok so 'I had tp threaten to not cook their dinner if they couldn't help me before they moved but they went!
I've put another bag of rubbish out and then...
I sorted out the baking and the pan cupboards.. I have 8 pan lids for pans I no longer own.. Bin!! .. I listed the steamer and a Le Creuset dish on ebay (9 things on) and palmed a pyrex dish on my daughter. I now have the baking stuff in the back of the cupboard and the pans I use daily in an accessible cupboard.
2 spiders ousted!

JAT, you may not have decluttered but you still DID IT! You let people in! Go, you!
Yeah, I not only let them in - they took photos of my house - to document due to the works on the party wall. Oh, the shame (self-inflicted)!!! The words 'hole', 'open' 'up' and 'swallow' sprang to mind.
Thinking about it, they're probably the first people apart from me to be in the house in 1.5 years. For the two years before that, it was the annual gas service (which is now overdue). I'm such an antisocial so-and-so.
I'm still at work and resenting it like heck. Going home now, nesting for at least a day and I'll go from there.
If anyone gets in my way on the tube, heaven help them. I am officially 'Not in a good mood'!
Hope everyone else is in a better frame of mind than I am.0
