buying a smartphone
Options
I don't know much about smartphones. Is it better to get a free one and pay a monthly contract. Or just buy outright.
Can you get them on payg? At the moment Im with 02. 02 seems to be cheaper than virgin mobiles as I have virgin broadband.
Could anyone suggest a good smartphone-up to about £150 and wheres the best place to purchase one please

It depends on your usage and if you have the money upfront to buy one.
How many minutes do you expect to use? Texts? Data?
The deal that I have just recently purchased was unlimited mins, texts and data on o2 for £26 a month with a free Samsung Galaxy S3.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

I don't text much. 200 minutes might suffice. Data im not sure. Ive used data this month for the first time on my mobile and the 100 data lasted less then 2 weeks. so may need 500.
I can afford to pay upfront for the phone0 -
Your first smartphone doesn't have to be top of the range like S3.
Very good smartphones are available for £80-£150.
150m+150t+400Mb are available for free on Ovivo PAYG. If you need more minutes, 150 'pack' costs £5. If you have WiFi at home and set everything correctly, 400Mb will suffice.

thank you.
what would you suggest.ive never used a smartphone. someone recommended a htc windows phone. said it was like a pc. someone else liked his Samsung s. I think 02 suggested a nokia lumia. Whats the difference between all of these please0 -
If you want a top of the range smartphone you'll be looking at £25pm +
If you want a mid range handset you'll be looking at around £15pm+
If you want a low end handset you can get good deals around £10pm
Alternatively you can buy the phone for £150 then pay around £10pm on a sim only.
Here a few examples-
High end phone-
HTC One X+ with Unlimited Mins/Texts + 1GB Data for £27pm = £648 over 2 years.
Mid range phone-
Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini with 300 Mins/Unl Texts/500mb data for £17pm with £30 cashback= £378 over 2 years
Low end phone-
HTC Desire C with 500 Mins/unl texts/500mb data for £10.00pm= £240 over 2 years. Thanks to MarkBargain
Sim Only option
Buy handset (any) between £100-£150 then take out a £10pm sim only with any network = £350-£400 over 2 years. BUT you can change phone/contract at any time.
I can't post links because i'm a new user but PM me if you want to know any of the deals.
You don;t need a top of the range smartphone for your first smartphone but if you like the look of the HTC One X+ and want to go for it for the features and camera then it's a good deal if you don't mind paying over £25pm.
I'd recommend an android phone or windows phone. Android phones have more apps like BBC iPlayer for watching tv on the go. Windows phone is quite simple and easy to use but doesn't have as many features. If you don't plan on using your phone for a lot of things then windows phone will do.
Go into any phone store and ask to see a One X+, S3 Mini, and Desire C. Play around with them and check out how it all works. The One X+ has a better camera, more storage, better screen, is faster etc... but if you compare it to a Desire C and are happy with the Desire C then why pay over £12pm.0 -

which shop is the best to buy one please? I know im with 02 but the shops always seem more expensive than others.0

I don't know. CPW, P4U. And it doesn't have to be one shop. And you don't have to buy in this shop. My suggestion was just to play with some phones. Then buy it online where better deals and cashback are available.0

the phones 4 u lady said this was a good deal. a Samsung ace. £17 monthly. is this a good phone?

It was a pretty poor phone even when it was released more than a year ago. It costs now about £100 on PAYG, but is much worse than popular Huawei G300 available for about £80.

And 250Mb is a dangerously low monthly allowance.0
