I agree. The paperwork I'm getting is totally confusing - sometimes it says Woolwich on it, sometimes it says Barclays. But my biggest complaint is the website. Now the Woolwich site would never have won any prizes, but the Barclays one is god awful. It gives the minimum of information, it seems to be impossible to find a list of payments and balances over time (I thought that was what a statement was) and you're supposed to be able to recognise your different accounts by an enormous account number. I hate it. 25 years ago I left Barclays because of their support for Apartheid - and now I've got them back again

have to agree there what account is what, what code do it use for what, how can I give a number for a card I dont have????

Website logic problems are easier, and sorry but a blind man could read the codes on letter easier!

The Barclays website is definitely an acquired taste. Here's a couple of tips to help you get started.

If you click on the link to an account, it will take you to a page showing a statement for the last few transactions. At the top of the page, you will see the account type. Make a note of the account type and the account number, then click on the 'Customise My Site' link at the bottom of the menu on the left-hand side. Now click on the first link, 'I name this account', and you can enter a sensible name for each of your accounts.

You can also customise your online statements, by changing the default statement from 7 days to a more useful 14 or 31 days.

On the statement page, you can click on the 'Change' button to enter any start and end date for the statement, but it only stores transactions for the last couple of months. If you want to keep the data for longer, you can download the statements to your computer in Excel or Microsoft Money format by selecting 'Export Data' from the drop-down menu at the bottom left of the page.

    Regards,

    Rob

Hey, thanks for that - I'm not sure that I'm particularly likely to acquire a taste for the Barclays website, but I'm sure your tips will make my future visits easier. ;)

We have had similar problems. First our cards were cancelled, discovered when I was on a shopping trip. Luckily I could go into the Woolwich and get some cash.
Now our Woolwich cards didn't work yesterday, so OH rang them (15 mins to get through) and they said they had sent new cards out, which they would cancel (??) and send some new ones out. Until then no cards!
I left Barclays years ago and don't want to be with them now.
Is there a decent current account out there like the old Woolwich account?

I've had 2 DD go out today and come straight back in ?? Can't understand it as the money is there ?

I wrote the account number down yesterdady and paid in at my local Barclays and that went through OOK - though on slip it asks for branch of Barclays so I put Woolwich ...

Might be looking at the Virgin 1 account as I hate the statements/internet site.

Spoken again to barclays today. They have cancelled my woolwich card but dont know why. Asked how I could get money as had none. Was told to go to my local branch (which is 10 miles away). Asked how I was meant to get there with no money and 3 children under 5? Well youll just have to wait for new card. I meant to feed my children how until then - well youll just have to go to your local branch then! Apparently if i run out of food etc I am either meant to walk 10 miles to get money or beg from friend and neighbours!

NICE CUSTOMER SERVICE. SWITCH TO BARCLAYS AND END UP BEGGING ON STREETS!

    hello,

well my wife and i have just had our accounts switched over and omg what a bunch of idiots, we have banked with the woolwich for quite a long period of time and had debit cards on our account.

we had lots of bits of paper and booklets coming through the door saying how everything will be the same blah blah just a name change blah blah, well our cards arived today and we have been issued with basic cash cards on our current account?.

!!!!!! we thaught so we rang barclays got through to some foreighn bloke who said no sir you have connect cards, i explained no we havnt and gave the card numbers, i was then put on hold for about 5 mins, then he came back and said you have cards waiting on the account and you need to go to the local branch and complete an application to upgrade your cards,

i said to him this is bang out of order, its not our fault that the accounts have come over to barclays and the cards should be the same as we had with the woolwich, he then said well we have had 100's of woolwich customers ringing up about the same problem and its because they all have bad credit and thats the reason why.

can barclays do this? is it not that they should issue us with the same bits as we had with the woolwich ? this is really annoying as i use my woolwich debit card all over the country and abroad and now were stuffed, we have got an account with the halifax with debit cards but iam reluctant to go back down that road as the halifax are crap, but what alternative have barclays left us with ? were going to the branch today to see what the score is, so if anyone else gets this problem please know your not the only ones.

    ile keep you all posted

Same Fiasco for us, went to put petrol in my car on weds of this week, went to pay with woolwich card, card was denied, I was flabbergasted and embarrassed all at the same time, garage assistant was really snotty, lucky for me I had enuff cash in my purse to pay for the petrol. Got home and rang Barclays, explained what had happened, put on hold for an enormous amount of time, only to be told, can't understand why your card was denied, everything according to them was hunkydory, go try your card in a cash machine see what happens, perhaps garage machine was faulty!! So off I went to try cash machine....guess what card was denied!!!!! Back on the phone same palaver, same length of time, to be told again nothing wrong with card, and barclay cards should be with me in a weeks time. I've always hated barclays and now i'm banking with them thru no fault of my own.
  • Thank God, it's nice to know that my wife and I are not the only people having trouble. Its a long story but here we go.

Our account was switched over earlier this week and we lost our access to the Woolwich internet banking. We had no cards, no details for Barclays internet or telephone bank access. Contacted Woolwich who couldn't access the account as we had been moved to Barclays, so for 3 days had no idea what money we had. It wasn't all bad at least our Woolwich cards still worked!!!

Internet details arrived yesterday (Friday) and that was just the begining. We logged on for the first time to be greeted by an overdrawn figure. This sent the wife into blind panic as we should have had reasonable amount in. I came in from work to be confronted by my wife staring silently at the computer screen. On looking it appears that any direct debits go out first and then they pay your money in after. Good idea plenty much bank charges me thinks. Wife phoned Barclays with a number of questions and got passed around a number of people with no real answers and no real understanding of what we were asking. After 30 minutes on the phone wife couldn't cope and burst into tears. As you could imagine I wasn't having that so I took the phone, light blue touch paper and retire to a safe distance!!!!

I was firm but fair in the circumstances and here is something that may interest you. I am paid on the 25th of every month and to make life easier any direct debts go out on the same day. Good idea you may think but ahh. Barclays state that I may be paid on the 25th, but the money has to be in the account 24 hours before they pay direct debits or standing orders. Reality is all the direct debits for this month would be refused and not paid. I explained that the Woolwich had no trouble with it why do you? THATS THE WAY WE DO BUSINESS SIR! was the reply. Why didn't you tell me before? I asked. Stunned silence and then YOU WILL HAVE TO CONTACT ALL OF YOUR BENEFICIARIES TO TELL THEM TO MOVE THE DATE. Some much for the easy move from one account to the other. It's Friday night 6pm 2 weeks to pay day and I'm supposed to change all that. YES they said, WE'LL PAY FOR ANY CHARGES. What about my credit rating? Yet another stunned silence.

After 4 hours of phone calls by both of us we had finally managed to change everything just in time for the end of the month, but that's not the end.

Looking at the Barclays website, which is rubbish by the way, it seems that the transaction dates dont tally up. I asked why not and was told that the money is debited straight away from your balance but does not appear on your statement until the vendor produces the till receipt to their bank. This could be a number of days after. For instance, I purchased petrol using my card on the 10th of May and it has just shown today on the statement as the 14th of May. The strange thing is it's only the 12th so whats that all about!!! How you are supposed to keep track of transactions when the date on your receipt is different to the date on your statement. I'd call Barclays if I thought it would do any good but I think the reply would be THAT'S THE WAY WE DO BUISNESS SIR!!!!!.

Anyway, I'm off to another bank ASAP and going to make a formal complaint to Barclays in writing but I wounder, is it worth phoning Watchdog or something like that as there appears to be lots of us. What do you think?
