    Hi all,

I am after some advice please. I contacted one of the main firms (rather not mention the firm) in December, and they were set to start on Jan 24th. Spoke to them night before and was told they were running late. would now be 27th. No problem, understandeble after the snow. Now its 15th of Feb and still waiting, had no contact from them. Have left messages for them to contact me. Has anyone else had this problem? I dont mind that they hav'nt started yet, but not being kept up to date is terrible.

    Cheers Cymro32[

    Hello Cymro32
I'm sorry I can't help - if you don't mention the Co. name I don't think people are going to be able to help. Is it concrete guttering you're having done? If so, the company I used TLG were excellent, came when they said they would and cleaned up after themselves.:j

My mother's house was built in the mid 1950's, and has concrete guttering. Some of it now needs replacing, but I was wondering if anyone else has any experience of this process, costs, etc.?

Have had a few experiences repairing this type of guttering. The only true way of curing any problems is having it cut off. It's not cheap to do, but a permanent solution.

    Hi sussie,

Thanks for reply. . Glad to hear you had great service as it reassures me when they do finally turn up. I live in North Wales so am not able to see their work on other properties.

  • I have just had the Finlock gutters on my semi detached house removed and I am very pleased with the result and would encourage any one else who has problems with them to seize the day and get rid of them once and for all.
Although my Finlock gutters had been regularly cleaned out and painted inside with Isoflex Liquid Rubber I noticed damp patches over the windows this past winter. Searching Google for 'concrete gutters' eventually led me to the name 'Finlock Gutters' ( a term that I had not heard of before). That led to sites such as this, on which there were the contact details of companies able to remove them.
My next door neighbour was also keen to have his gutters removed also so in March 2011 I obtained quotes for the work from most of the companies already mentioned on this site. All offered discounts when both properties had the work done jointly. Eventually we went with S F Roofing. The work, on both the front and back of the houses took three and a half days with the scaffolding going up 4 days before they started and coming down the day after they finished (all the scaffolding work was arranged by S F Roofing). Both myself and neighbour are very pleased with the work.
A number of my other neighbours have had their gutters relined, some with lead and others with glass reinforced plastic but they continue to have problems with water penetration.
Thanks to all forum contributors who have added to my understanding of this issue.

I'm going to be nice since its your first post but naming the same roofing company twice in very short order really sounds a tad spammy to me. Coupled with mentioning the name of the gutter type three times in the same post is likely to do wonders for seach engine results for said firm. Hope I'm not being too suspicious.

    Cheers

    Clever ;)

By the way, you can effectively reline concrete gutters with an EPDM one sheet system.
  • We have had our concrete guttering cut away and replaced with upvc by a company called roof guard solutions ltd they are based in bromsgrove but work nationally and i must say that after having quotes from trent valley, tlg and fascias 4 u that roof guard solutions ltd not only offered the best quote but also they were in no way pushy from a sales point and they managed to answer all my questions and provide me with customers i could contact for references. i would reccomend them anyday!
  • We had the concrete guttering on our house too, we had it lined over the years but it never worked properly eventually we came accross the notion that you could have it cut away we decided to get some quotes, we had 3 quotes one from tlg guttering which seemed a good company but were very expensive (£3500 for 12 metres) secondly we had roof guard solutions ltd who were very professional and were also registered with fairtrades their price seemed fair for the job they did and then finally we had a quote from trent valley fascias who were quite cheap and seemed ok until the guy got rather pushy that we should sign on the day. After careful consideration we decided to go with roof guard solutions ltd and we have no regrets they did abeautiful job and several of the neighbours have had theirs done since.

    Hope this helps?
  • Just thought i'd let you know my experience of getting my Finlock gutter removed and replaced.

When we purchased our home 9 months ago, the survey confirmed that my concrete gutters were already causing damage to both the inside & outside of my brickwork & cavity, and the lining that the previous owner had put in was having no protective effect. I spoke to some of my neighbours who confirmed they had the same problem. Consequently I asked a friend of mine, a Structural Engineer, to give me his professional opinion, and he confirmed that removal was the only practical solution for the future. Most importantly, he was also clear that I should ensure I find out exactly how the work is done before I agree to it because it is a Structural job and I should not risk it being done badly, irrespective of the price.

Some of the other houses on my road had previously had their Finlock gutters replaced so I asked them for the name of the company that had completed their work, and I also got the name of other companies from Google.

I had a 'quote' from all four. The method of 'quoting' was very different between the companies.

The first two didn't want to come to my house but simply asked how much concrete gutter I had and gave me an estimate over the phone without having ever seen my house. When I asked how they actually completed the work, they tried to reassure me it would be done correctly but could not give me any of the significant detail.

The third 'quote' was from Trent Valley Fascias from Nottingham. I have to say from start to finish, they were very professional. The chap that came to my house to complete the quote explained everything in detail about how the job would be undertaken, which took about 20 minutes. He then measured up, and gave us a specific 'quote' for the whole job, with no estimates. At no stage, did my wife and I feel that we were being pressured into agreeing for the work to be done. I stated that we would need some time to think it over & were getting other quotes, but would also run it past our Structural Engineer friend. He outlined that Trent Valley had their work inspected when they undertook work for Local Councils and it had been passed as meeting Building Regulations. He was more than happy to leave the 'quote' with us, and explained how we contacted Trent Valley if we decided to take their 'quote' up. We have previously dealt with window replacement salesmen so had been concerned this might be the same 'hard-sell' but it could not have been further from the truth.

The fourth quote was from a company, whose salesman came to the house, but on describing the work done, it became very clear that his main selling point was to tell us that it was done as cheap as possible. The reason for this became clear when the method of undertaking the work was to simply knock the Finlock gutter off to the brickwork and then stick some fascia board to the concrete lintel left behind.

I then asked my Structural Engineer friend to look over the 'quotes' for me.
First of all, he told me to dismiss the two companies who could not detail their work because for such a Structural job, the method of removal/replacement was highly important and if the companies could not give me detail of how they completed the work it was highly likely it would be done badly.

He was alarmed with the method of removal detailed by the fourth 'quote' as they were evidently not concerned about the high risk of damaging the remaining concrete lintel by simply attaching a fascia board to it, probably by drilling into the lintel.

As it was, my friend had already heard of Trent Valley Fascias as other houses in our area had been done by them, and he was impressed that their Salesman had been able to give such a detailed demonstration of how the work would be done, and had been happy to leave the 'quote' with us while we gave it further consideration.

As an additional 'check' my friend suggested we contact Trent Valley and ask if he could meet the fitters and see a job actually being done. I contacted Trent Valley, in all honesty expecting them to be a little wary of this, but again, they had absolutely no problem with this, and arranged for my friend and I to visit a nearby job. We were able to meet the 'in-house' fitters, and were taken up the proper scaffolding to see the job bring undertaken there and then. My Structural Engineer friend was extremely impressed by the workmanship and the efficient manner in which the fitters worked together. Most importantly he was able to confirm that the detailed description of the work given by the Salesman was exactly how the work was being done, and it evidently met Building Regulations.

We therefore had no hesitation in contracting Trent Valley Fascias to do the work on our Finlock guttering. It was completed over 8 weeks ago, and we are extremely happy with the quality of the fit but equally importantly it works, as the damp is already drying out.

I do hope anyone that is getting this work done takes the time to look into it properly and ensures they get the best quality work undertaken.

    Thanks for reading !!

This was a completely fabricated post created by the owner of Trent Valley Fascias because they are desperate for business, if your wondering why their desperate for business just check out their workmanship
