Hello there, will definitely let you know how TLG perform - they start tomorrow 8 March 2010. Sussie :)
  • Before anyone books with any company to have their concrete guttering removed, I would advise you to 'shop around' and check out a range of companys for

    i) quality of work,
    ii) price,
    iii) recommendations,
    iv) guarantees on work done

I did this and I was most impressed by Trent Valley Fascias. I had googled concrete guttering and TVF came out highest on Google. The guy that came out and demonstrated the way the work would be done, the type of materials used, and left me with a written quote, based on the number of metres of concrete that needed replacing. I expected some sort of 'hard selling' technique to get me to sign up there and then but there was absolutely none of that and the guy simply left me with the written quote and said that if i wanted to go ahead simply post the quote back, signed, to the company and arrangements would then be made for fitting. Mine was an awful lot cheaper that £4000 which sounds very pricey (unless of course that quote was for guttering twice the length of mine!).

All I can say is that the guy who quoted the price to me also gave me access to a number of people who had given the company as a recommendation and I checked some of these out, including speaking to the house owners. They were all delighted with the work and price, and apparently their neighbours had become very interested in having the same work done. I think this speaks for itself.

Anyway, the choice of company is yours at the end of the day, but my advice is check a few companies out and make sure you include Trent Valley Fascias in your list of companies. You can find out more info on trentvalleyfascias.co.ukwebsite - very informative and gives you some idea of who you are dealing with.
  • When you contact Trent Valley Fascias I would suggest you might want to ask for PAUL. He was the guy I dealt with - very friendly, informative, and couldn't do enough for us.

    Hi yah Susie
I am a new member and noticed your emails.
I am not sure if you have agreed to have work done with anyone yet but I have been removing concrete guttering for many years now and I am extremely competitive but more to the point I am a carpenter and joiner by trade and know the correct way to remove and install a traditional roof that won’t let you down in years to come.
    kind regards Tim

We have now had the guttering removed and are pleased with the look of the new guttering however time will tell as to how successful it's been. We do have a guarantee of 10 years if these are worth anything these days. I have to say I misled you in our telephone conversation - it was for just two sides not four as I quoted. I was thinking the guttering ran all the way round the house. Anyway, thanks again for your interest and comments. Regards, Sussie

Just to say that after getting several companies to quote we've decided to go with Fascias 4 U Midlands Ltd to have our Finlock guttering removed and made good. I'll report back on how we get on.

Thanks for letting us know that you've decided to go with Fascias 4 U Midlands Ltd. I do hope they do you a good job as it's such a specialist area. We are pleased with the work TLG did but I suppose the years need to roll on before you know whether it was a good job or not. Regards, Sussie

    Hello all

It's taken me a while to report back, but that's partly because I wanted to give the work time to settle down and for any faults etc to come to light.

So, how did we get on with Fascias 4 U Midlands Ltd? Although I've not seen the work for myself (we moved abroad with work and the house is let), the tenants and my leasing agent both seem happy with the work. The firm appeared very conscientious and were there exactly when they said, completed on time and cleaned up properly afterwards.

The quote I got was initially very high, but on questioning it they reduced it very significantly. I do suspect that they thought I was some rich landlord with a string of properties. Ha!

So, would I recommend them? Yes. I would. Sorry not to be able to be more detailed, but I don't even have any photos available.
  • We had TLG Gutters from Derby cut off our old finlock concrete gutters, a neat, efficient job. What a relief!
They fitted patented joiners between our new gutters and the neighbours old finlock guttering which ensure that all rain water can drain away, so the risk of any problems at the boundary between your new gutters and the neighbours old finlocks is minimised.
The finlock blocks remain sat atop your cavity walls, and this is a lasting legacy with risk of problems - if your roof leaks, it could leak in to the finlock blocks and cause trouble: it is a first principle of house maintenance that you ensure that your property is wind and water tight (weather proof), so do take advice and get the roof relined if this has not been carried out since being built circa 1950... the old roof paper will not be much good after 50+ years! This IS more important than re-decorating your living room.

:rotfl:Many thanks for this information. We have had TLG come to do the Finlock Guttering just as you described and, so far, am pleased with the work. Although I suppose time is the only thing that proves if it was a good investment or not. Our bungalow was built prior to 1950 but does have a felt lined roof so hope we'll be OK. Regards,
  • Hi all,

I am after some advice please. I contacted one of the main firms (rather not mention the firm) in December, and they were set to start on Jan 24th. Spoke to them night before and was told they were running late. would now be 27th. No problem, understandeble after the snow. Now its 15th of Feb and still waiting, had no contact from them. Have left messages for them to contact me. Has anyone else had this problem? I dont mind that they hav'nt started yet, but not being kept up to date is terrible.

    Cheers Cymro32
