Obviously there are never any guarantees, something could happen at any stage not just in the first 12 weeks. But I'm sure I've read that seeing the heartbeat early on lowers the chance of a mc.

This is on the Miscarriage Association website:
Research has shown that if you see a heartbeat at 6 weeks of pregnancy, the chances of the pregnancy continuing are 78%.
A heartbeat at 8 weeks increases the chance of a continuing pregnancy to 98% and at 10 weeks that goes up to 99.4%.
So things could still go wrong and sadly sometimes do, but as long as there is a heartbeat, the risk of miscarriage decreases as the weeks go by.

alipops1986 - you are right there are no guarantees but I do believe it is quite rare to have miscarriage after 9 weeks I had a missed miscarraige in July and the Sonogragher said after the scan that to have seen a heartbeat at 8+2 (I had an early scan) and then to loose it at 9 onwards is very rare but sadly it does happen. At the time I was obviously devestated and it still affects me now, I don't think it ever leaves you; but the cycle of life is as it is and if I could one thing I would wish for it would be that people did not have miscarriages.

If you need to tell work due to safety for example I would tell them for the risk of having a miscarriage is lower than probably the risk of causing harm (I can't think of an example - working with children with learning disabilities and them hurting you by accident).

Some people have early scans at 7 weeks some early at nine ish - I had one at 9 weeks this time privatly and it really was the most amazing thing to have. The baby was moving and heart was fluttering away - it even did a body pop lol. My partner laughs about that still, now.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and enjoy it, I hope you are not suffering from too much sickness or tiredness xx

I agree with Sam if the risk of being hurt by a kid is possible you should tell them.

Also if the worst happens you'd likely end up telling them anyway as you would need time off.
  • i told my employer a week after i found out - purely because I had a MC back in April, and by telling him, I knew he would understand if it happened again.

OH rang me at work to say a letter from the hospital arrived & could he open it! Of course I let him :rotfl:

    Scan date 22nd Jan.
Early scan 3rd Jan. Counting down the days - I am craving that reassurance that there is a baby growing inside. Although with the sickness, tiredness & sore boobs I have no reason to not believe it!

Thanks Sam and Claire - that's very kind of you to share with me.
I've made my mind up that I will tell them next week, when I get back to work but ask that it is kept confidential until 12 weeks. I'll be 6 weeks by time I tell them.
I'm also going to book a private scan for 8 weeks, I'm seeing MW for first appointment on 20th at 4pm, so going to try to book private scan for that day.

Thats what I did - asked my boss to keep it a secret. I had to tell him because I was puking all over the place! :)
  • wangdoodle I think everyone feels overwhelmed at some point.

teabag29 you count from the first day of your last period.

Had my 7 week scan today because of some previous bleeding. I was so relieved to see a strong heartbeat on screen. They scared me at first when the measured them at 6 weeks 5 days when I thought I was 7+2. But then she explained that because bean was being lazy and curled up (taking after its dad :p) she couldn't measure them properly and they could well be 7 weeks.

Must have been happy with bean as they have told me all ok and to wait now till my 12 week scan. They think because bean is so tucked in it's whats caused the bleeding. They gave me a scan pitcure to keep and you can see all this space in the sac and its tucked into the corner lol. I couldn't wait 2 weeks for this scan god knows how I'm gonna cope another 5 weeks!

will post a picture if anyone wants me too not that you can see a lot can just make out a bean shape lol.

  • Hello ladies!

welcome to the new posters - December seems to be a busy month for BFPs :)

alipops if I worked in an environment where there's a chance somebody could get aggressive I would tell work I was pregnant (I don't, and I've told my work anyway at about 5 weeks due to feeling really ill, my line manager has kept it confidential and will do so until I'm ready to announce it to everybody), I think the fear of telling them is the worst thing, their reaction probably won't be as bad as you expect!

plantpot glad the early scan went well and you feel reassured - lovely picture!

wangdoodle - don't worry what you're feeling is perfectly normal. The morning I went in to be induced with DS I was still panicking that I wasn't ready to be a mummy but as soon as he was born it was fine and it all came naturally!

AFM, I'm another suffering terrible constipation - so glamourous! My other symptoms had trailed off but have been feeling nauseous all day today - think it's excitement about the scan tomorrow. Have been feeling what I think are movements again (could be the constipation but I don't think so). What I'm finding really weird is that when my nausea was really bad all I wanted to do was eat, since it's been OK I've lost my appetite!

Hope you're all doing well and not feeling too ill!

    Aqua 12+5 xx
  • Thanks for the reassurance ladies. I'm not quite as anxious today. I think I made it worse for myself yesterday by reading all the feeding bumf the midwife gave me and finding lots of new stuff to worry about!

Congrats on your scan plantpot that's great news, you must feel very happy.

Good luck for your scan tomorrow AquamarineMonkey I'll be thinking of you.
