Robots it's probably best not to self medicate the folic acid, just ask the midwife when you see her, I've only been taking the extra since it was prescribed at 8 weeks and it's only 5mg extra so I'm not sure it makes much difference to be honest. How high is your BMI anyway? Mines 40 (which came as a shock as I thought it was about 36 ha ha)

Just kinda jumping in here for a moment, my BMI is 47, and I was told by my midwife that the 400mg was plenty. There isn't really enough evidence that taking more aids in uptake, but if it's prescribed, it is a water soluble vitamin, so any that your body doesn't need, it will come out in your wee. :o hth!

  • congrats mrs t_m :) xx
  • Thank you for the reassurance. I don't think I will have an early scan wangdoodle. I'll just hold out as it will only be about four weeks away and whatever the outcome I cannot change it. I'm just trying to stay positive. I know every pregnancy is different but I haven't a hint of anything (besides a no periods of course) this time.
On a positive note I have just cleaned my house from top to bottom and it's looking lovely! :-) Going to put my feet up now and have a brew. X
  • claretsgirl another thing I have done if having a bit of a worry is do a cheap HPT if the line is as dark or darker than a previous one I feel reassured. I've done that a few times this pregnancy!
  • Thank you Aquamarine, I might just do that. I'm probably worrying over nothing and symptoms will hit me hard before long. This will be my last pregnancy, I think that's why I am so worried. X
  • Aquamarine, thanks for sharing your spotting experience, it really helps me put things in perspective. When I phoned the hospital the first time they said bleeding happens to lots of women and most are ok so it's nothing to worry about. And most of the info online says the same thing, so I thought I would hush monitor (and, ironically, like claretsgirl I'm thinking whatever happens will happen, there's not much the medical profession can do about early miscarriages, they don't even have a clue what causes them), but it's been progressively getting worse, I.e. More often, redder, more painful, so I'm really quite worries now. I'm seeing the midwife tomorrow, maybe she can refer me somewhere quicker for a scan.

This also causes a dilemma that I hadn't considered before now: I haven't told work, because of the standard "it's too early, anything g could happen", but now I'm taking two afternoons off in a row for unexplained medical appointments, and I'm actually thinking of calling in sick so I don't have to carry that stupid laptop around with me. Should I tell them now anyway or stick to my guns & keep stumm? I am a bit paranoid that this news will affect my annual review outcome...

  • I had my scan today too. It was amazing! We saw the heart beating and baby moving its legs. We could even see the little fingers. We paid 4.50 for 2 photos but they gave us 5! It was so quick, actual scan was maybe 10 mins and I had blood done, booked my next scan (February) and we were out in 45 mins.

Mrs TM - glad to hear you had a lovely scan too.

Claretgirl and Devildolly - I have also had very few symptoms. No sickness. Cup size the same as normal. Maybe some tiredness early on, but I put that down to giving up caffeine. I was worried about it, but today I was told everything looks great :)

Also, the midwife offered to try and find the heartbeat at my booking appt. She said there was a chance of hearing it at 10+2 because I am very skinny. She couldnt find it (and made me promise not to worry, but of course I did!) Today we saw the heart beating away and everything is fine. I hope that reassures anyone else in the same boat as me.

I think we feel more excited/happy today than we did on the day we had our positive test. It feels real now :)

Hope you are all well x

Your baby prob just had a little growth spurt!

My baby was measuring 3 days ahead of when I know I ovulated, the midwife said they can grow fast & then slow so if you get a scan after a growth spurt it can make it seem like you're further along!

Robots it's only vitamins and I'd go with the nhs recommendation it's not really self medicating then!

Just seconding this, my baby was measuring a few days ahead at 12 week scan & then bang on my dates at 20 week scan
First baby due 3/3/14 - Team Yellow! Our little girl born 25/2/14 :D

Did you have the same midwife as me? :)

She wanted to find it at 9 weeks but I wouldn't let her! Seems quite a rare thing for them to offer. Mine is very excitable lol
  • Hugs Adrenalina, I hope the midwife manages to get you an earlier scan, whilst I agree that there's not really anything they can do, it is a very worrying time and at least a scan gives you an answer.

I had already told my line manager and one other colleague as I was feeling quite unwell early on, so I was honest about the 2 trips to the hospital and now my HR department know too because we have return to work interviews. You can't be disciplined or have it counted towards your absence trigger if time off is pregnancy related, that's another reason why I told my work, but I don't have any worries that they would behave in an underhand way because I'm pregnant, whereas I know some women do have this worry about their employers. It would be breaking the law if your being pregnant affected your annual review outcome as employers cannot discriminate against pregnant employees.

Congratulations on your successful scan Carrie. Did your dates change or stay the same?
