so glad for the ladies who had good scans today :)

had my booking in appointment today it was pretty underwhelming! asked me lots of questions, gave me my notes and told me to fill quite a few parts out myself. she didn't even take bloods or anything, I'll go back in 2 weeks for that. can't wait for the scan just to check if everything's okay.

I was surprised at how much she talked about breast feeding, for such an early appointment.

That's exactly the same as my booking in! Rubbish wasn't it! I go back in 10 days for the bloods etc (must find the stickers that got sent with my scan letter, the midwife needs the stickers to take blood, apparently that's how it's done in our area!)

Didn't make it to the xmas market, wasn't feeling 100%, got a day off a week on Weds so we are going to go then, hopefully will be less busy.

So happy to see there were two happy scans yesterday! Welcome to any new joiners I've missed too... Wangdoodle I know I've seen your name when lurking on the TTC so huge congrats there!

Feel a duvet day coming on today, got a bit of paranoia building about 'little HB' being OK but with no reason for thinking it so am just going to try and chill out (little HB is our nickname for the baby as when we had our private scan we kept going on about how amazing it was seeing the heartbeat!) 19 days until my scan!! x

  • Morning all,

I had quite a good sleep last night, went to bed at about 10pm, woke up at 3am for wee, must have disturbed DS as then he was awake demanding a bottle of milk, so I changed his nappy too, he went back off about 4am, and then he woke me up about 8am. I sent him downstairs with OH and stayed in bed til about 9.30am- that's a big lie in for me :)

It looks like the nausea has returned, felt sick all last night, overnight and still feel sick now. Just in time for the one night a year we go out for a v. expensive meal with friends, been looking forward to this for months. We do go for meals all year round but this one is our special yearly treat in a posh restaurant. At least I'm only feeling nauseous, and not actually being sick yet.

Got a busy weekend ahead, going shopping in a bit, then will spend a couple of hours getting ready for the meal tonight and tomorrow we're going to my friends to celebrate my godson's 2nd birthday.

Mrs T M - it will depend how high risk they class you as to whether you'll be allowed a homebirth. I had my heart set on a waterbirth at the hospital with DS but because I was classed as high risk they wouldn't even let me do that. I had to go straight to delivery suite as DS had to be monitored inside me for the whole labour.
I think ladies who opt for a homebirth a very brave, I'm too much of a wimp, and after complications with DS I want to be at the hospital where all the pain relief, midwives and doctors are! I'd like to try a waterbirth this time if they let me, but knowing me I'll want to get out after about half an hour and have an epidural!

Hope you all have a lovely weekend! x

I'd be too scared for a homebirth too!! Abit envious of those who go for it in a way!

I don't want an epidural, and I'd like to use a pool as pain relief (they'd have to let me have it warm though!) and to give birth if possible. OH is going to be the only non-medical person present at the birth so we see him/her first... that's all I've thought of so far!
  • My sister had a waterbirth with her 2nd and she says it really does help with the pain of contractions. It still hurts pushing the baby out though! She did it without any pain relief though.
I tried pethedine with DS but it didn't even take the edge off, after several hours of being in agony I opted for an epidural and then all was well with the world! I have absolutely no threshold for pain though, and I know everybody is different, but I won't hesitate to have another epidural if the pain gets too much!
I think if my labour had been quicker I'd have managed without the epidural, but I'd been in labour at least 6 hours before I had it, then at 14 and a half hours they decided that I had to have an emergency c-section. I worked out that if there wasn't the need for the c-section at the rate my labour was progressing it would have been 36 hours in total!
I'm really looking forward to the birth this time. 1st time I was terrified as I didn't know what to expect, and I didn't know how I'd cope with the pain, but this time I'm not worried at all because I know what's coming and I know I can cope (and if I can't I know which drugs to ask for lol).

This is a bit of a rant, so skip if you want. I will not argue about me choosing to have a home birth, it fits for my family and it's what we've chosen to do. I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from having a hospital birth, but I do encourage everyone to research options. Midwife led units are kind of an in-between hospital and home birth if there is one in your area, and are also a wonderful option.

Reasons I want a home birth: I have severe anxiety issues with places and people I do not know, especially hospitals. I want my husband to actually help, instead of just holding my hand. Lower rate of haemorrhage, infection, tears, and intervention in home births. Women who have had both a hospital birth and a home birth state that their pain levels were less than half what they were in the hospital, again, leading towards less intervention. I'm still learning about them, and there are a few complications that would make me go into hospital, but I know I would end up having a panic attack, be strapped down, and probably forced to do something I don't want to do.

The only risks I have currently: first child, overweight. Neither of which can be used to deny you a home birth. Legally, they cannot deny me regardless of the risks, but I am smart enough to know when to go into hospital if it's absolutely necessary. That was one thing I did not like about the midwife appointment. They treated me like I didn't know anything until I got tired of it and made a point of pointing out my two degrees and my knowledge of the human body, especially my body.

I'm not trying to dissuade anyone from having a hospital birth, far from it. It isn't a right fit for myself, my baby, and my family. Where I'm originally from, they don't even have midwives, and the hospital is an hour away by car. No buses, no taxis, and the ambulances won't carry you that far unless you're dying.

I could go on, but if anyone is remotely interested in even learning about home birth, whether or not you want one, I suggest getting and reading 'Home birth, a practical guide' by Nicky Wesson. Most libraries have it.

mrs t_m, this is a friendly thread, nobody is going to argue with you about whatever you choose to do, people will just share their opinions, as you have shared yours. :)

personally I wouldn't have a home birth as if anything goes wrong I want to be as close as possible to any help! I think my job (working with severely disabled children, some as a result of birth injuries) heavily influences that too :)
  • sunshine we never made it to the markets yesterday either for the same reason - I felt a bit yucky and sick and wanted to enjoy the food!

trying to persuade oh to go tonight with some friends but he's not having it, I know it'll be packed though so maybe a good thing :)

    9 weeks today :)
  • I hope you didn't think I was trying to put you off a homebirth Mrs T M. I understand your reasons for wanting one, and I hope you get have one. Obviously every woman's choice is an individual one personal to them and thier family.
I'm just to much of a wimp to even consider it, but that's probably because I had complications with DS (known in advance of the birth) so even my waterbirth dream got ruled out well in advance. I fully understood why I wasn't allowed one when they explained it though. For a start the monitoring equipment they had to use wasn't waterproof! (Apparently some hospitals do have the waterproof monitoring equipment but mine didn't).
I'm praying they don't recommend a c-section this time, as I still have my heart set on that waterbirth that I didn't get last time, and failing that I want to give birth naturally (not that it was my choice to have the c-section last time, I had to consent to it when they said they needed to get DS out quickly but I wouldn't have opted to have one as it wasn't what I wanted).
Part of me thinks it's too soon to be planning how I want to give birth but then I think 40 weeks isn't that long and by the time I have my booking in appointment I'll be 8 weeks, which is a fifth of the way through already, by the 12 week scan almost a third of the way through, and by the 20 week scan halfway through.
I remember when I was expecting DS thinking there was loads of time to get everything organised then before I knew it there was 4 weeks to go.
I don't want to wish time away but I am looking forward to maternity leave, I'm hoping to spend a few weeks at home with DS first (and OH when he's not at work) as I don't feel I spend enough time with him because of working full time so it will be nice to have that bit of alone time together as we won't get it again once the baby arrives. It will be lovely getting to spend a few months at home with both DS and the new baby too without work getting in the way. I'm planning on taking maternity leave at 36 weeks and if I have any holidays left taking them just before that. I'm on countdown already only 30 weeks to go lol.

Not at all! I've just already been met with disbelief and a raised voice from my midwife when I mentioned it. She stated: they won't let you have one because you're overweight! My reply: but legally, they cannot deny me a home birth, so long as I am well educated on the risks. Her: well.... yes. *insert defeated look here from the midwife*

She didn't mark home birth desired on my maternity papers (even though I'm tempted to add that myself), and now I have two appointments. Both at the hospital, but only one for a scan. I don't know what the one at 16 weeks will be, because all of my midwife appointments are supposed to be at the GP's office or my home, NOT the hospital. I'll be calling the hospital Monday morning to enquire as to what that one is, and I will refuse to attend it if it's a tour of the maternity unit or for testing that I haven't consented to.
