  • Just to set any ladies minds at rest who might be worrying about high BMI = large baby. DS1 was born at 40+1 and weighed 6lbs 7oz. I did have to have an emergency c-section but that was nothing to do with my size it was due to other complications that are rare but not size related. The risk of gestational diabetes is higher and that could cause baby to be big. I didn't get gestational diabetes xx

Gestational diabetes is still rare. Although, my ex's sister (who might have weighed 80 pounds and who is taller than me) had it when she was pregnant with her little one, so it doesn't exactly discriminate upon weight as much as the doctors would like everyone to believe. Granted, she ate nothing but fast food and soda before and after she found out she was pregnant, so that probably had more to do with it than the weight thing.

I've been reading up on it, and while there isn't a way to 100% not get it, there are a few things you can do to cut your risk. Nothing has been proven in a lab of course, just personal experiences from people around the web, so take that as you will. The biggest thing that I've read is to try and have protein with or as breakfast. Still eat the carbs, but wait until a bit later in the day (10 am or after usually) to have them, to give your blood sugar a bit of time to stabilize after being so low overnight. Right now, I'm just eating what I can, when I can, but come second trimester, I'll probably start keeping an eye on when I eat my carbs and I'll do my best to always have a 1:1 ratio of protein to carbs.

Since this baby is making me unable to eat anything even remotely sweet (except for the nutragrain fruit bars surprisingly), eating protein and carbs shouldn't be too difficult. :o

Big welcome to PommeVerte, AquamarineMonkey, EmmaClaire and Robotsindisguise (and sorry if i've missed anyone else). PV I remember from the TTC board that you had been trying for a really long while, so huge congrats in particular - hope it goes well at the doctors today. Looking forward to getting to "know" the rest of you ladies too. Robotsindisguise - I think small amounts of spotting can be entirely normal, so don't blame yourself and give your MW a call if you're really worried.

sunshine81 - glad to hear your reassurance scan went well; i loved mine too and it was worth every penny.

sophiasmum - sorry to hear about your fall but hopefully you are feeling more confident now that everything's ok.

neverdespairgirl - congrats on your scan - it was good they were so thorough

samtoby - huge amounts of luck for you today! will be thinking of you (and stalking the thread for your updates) xxx

Afm, well mean AWOL for a few days as we're desperately trying to get packed up as, as well as having my 12 week scan on Friday, we are also moving house then too!!! Bonkers I know. Poor DH has had to do pretty much everything as I've been really tired and lethargic.

Told a couple more of my close friends this weekend, as we were all at a party and I obviously wasn't drinking (when you're normally a lush, it's pretty obvious to people straight away!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Feels more "real" now and looking forward to the scan on Friday but also a bit nervous again now.

Hope everyone has a good day x

  • Hi all!

Just wondering if I can join in? I am 6w today with #3!

For those worried about BMI and baby size, my second was a whopping 10lbs9! I am a size 14 so (fairly!!!!) average. You can never guess how big they will be!

Everyone seems much further along than me (and having scans) I'm very jealous! :-) x
  • welcome Preggosaurus and congrats! (Oh and I LOVE your screen name!!)

Hi Preggosaurus and congrats too! Although quite a few of us had our BFPs around the same time, so are graduating quite soon (hopefully), there's also been a run of new people in the last week or so, so you're definitely not the only "early" lady.

    Good luck Samtoby!

Is anyone else around 10-11 weeks and not heard about a scan yet? I had my booking in appointment 2 weeks ago and was told to expect a letter. I work for the NHS and i'm finding the urge just to look myself up and find out very strong! Although of course i'm not going to! Grrrrr.

I was 11 weeks at the weekend and have my scan next week (Friday 15th)

The appointment was made when I was sat with the midwife at my booking in appointment. She just got her mobile out and phoned them to book it

You must have amazing will power not to look yourself up! Or is not allowed?
