What do they do different for 'older mums'. Ill be 42 by the time of my midwife appt.
Also, what/ where is the booking in appt?
Hi there - the booking in appointment is the first appointment with the midwife. So you either go and see your GP for them to refer you to the midwife, or you can self-refer by calling the surgery (depending on the practice). The midwife should then make your 12 week scan appointment and refer you on to other teams if necessary.
I imagine that because you're an "older mum" (like me) you will be referred to the midwife at the hospital (at least that's how i'm told it happens around here) and they may arrange a few appointments with the obstetrics (sp?) team to keep an eye on you because some of the risks are greater, the older you get. On the plus side, you may get more scans (although again it may depend on your hospital).0 -
The treatment here is the same regardless of how old you are or how many previous children or miscarriages you have had.. nuchal/quad tests are routinely offered. consultant referrals are made routinely .. they usually see you once and say 'see when you are overdue'.. all exactly the same.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0

Anyone else on here is over 40? Anyone over 40 & having their first?
OH is just delighted - I'm delighted & terrified!
When I called my GP surgery I was told that the GP didn't need to see me & I needed to book a 45 min appt with the midwife so I assume this will be the booking in appt.
I will be 8 weeks at the time of the appt.
Some extra scans would be good - although I may change my mind on this if I have to have a lot of extra trips to the hospital.
Hugs to everyone who is feeling sick & tired. No symptoms for me at the moment.0 -
8 weeks will be the booking.. 45 minutes is optimistic.. I was in an hour and a half last week, be prepared for blood letting .. they like it.. I swear they drink the stuff!. I'm coming up 40 too, it is far from my first though
You usually get a couple of extra appointments with your first (16 and 24 week normally) but you don't get extra scans here unless they feel there is a problem with the babys growth or fluid.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
Well for the first time in 3 weeks I actually feel almost normal! And now of course that worries me because then I think something's wrong....
The joys of early pregnancy!
I am 9 weeks so am hoping the feeling better is because my hormones have peaked and are starting to go down a little.
Tempted to book a scan but money's a bit tight at the moment as we are building an extension.
Only just over 3 more weeks till my scan if I can be patient!0 -

I'm 38 (will be 39 by the due date though) and this is my 2nd pregnancy (not counting my miscarriage last year). I'll also be 8 weeks by my booking in appointment - although I've had an appointment with the (diabetes) specialists already, they reckon it's about a 4 week wait for booking in as they're inundated at the moment.
Because of my pre-existing conditions I'm going to be at the hospital every 1-2 weeks  - this is going to be tricky explaining to work without actually telling them why, so I might have to tell them sooner rather than later, even though I'm not keen on doing this.
I'm just feeling pretty knackered, sick and woolly-headed at the moment, although I start to feel better towards the evening.0 -
I'm still struggling with the idea of telling my skiing friends about being pg.
I'm wondering whether to say I have had some gynae surgery this week so I can't ski and that I'm on some medication because of it so I can't drink.
TBH I don't mind telling the couple (I think she would guess anyway) but the rest of the group is blokes so I would hope they wouldn't ask any further - Although would take the p@@@ because I wasn't drinking.
If I had a miscarriage they are not the friends I would look to for support.0 -

I like the idea of the sprained ankle...you could always have a 'vodka' & coke?People don't know what they want until you show them.0 -
We are in a chalet where the wine will flow at dinner so it will be difficult to disguise.
If only I wasn't normally such a drinker!
MV - know the feeling, my school friend has a 19 & 16 yo.
Comments which have been made by friends with kids whilst we were TTC have been around 'couldn't imagine having a baby to deal with'. People will think we are crazy.0
