Andy if you're worried something is amiss then the normal thing to do is make it possible to check (by visiting) asap, not make excuses.

I live 30 mins from grandparents and when they were needing help, I prioritised saving up 3x taxi fares so I could drop everything and go if needed. I didn't sit there and say "well I don't drive and am too sick myself to manage the 45 min bus which runs 10-6, taxis are expensive and no buses from train station", even though that was the reality.

I did what was needed in case there was an emergency.

Better yet, why don't you and your wife pick him up one weekend and have him over to stay at yours, is there room? Tell sister/Dad it's so she can have a break etc etc. Or visit him one sunday and take him out for a roast, again sell it as giving the sister a break. That way you can test the lay of the land and tell him your worries in private.

If it is that important and you are that worried you can find a way. Find ways you can make it happen not reasons you can't!

Just to remind people Andy is not working and the family is under financial stress.

So he can drop everything in an emergency (and has done so previously), but visiting weekly may be a challenge. Ditto, I was going to suggest either few rounds of golf (if Andy plays) or taking dad away on holiday, but re-reading I suspect these might be a challenge financially.

Maybe finances are the issue here. Andy isn't working and resents is sister who lives with her father for getting a free ride. My uncle was the same. Didn't do anything for my grandparents but wanted their money to be spent on him and no one else. Maybe the father doesn't ring Andy because he doesn't want to listen to his daughter being slagged off?

I suggest that you look in a mirror. You have contributed nothing of any worth to this thread unlike a lot of others, some of whom I do not agree with because they have no idea of the exact circumstances.

So no answer as to how you managed to contact a charity that no longer exists, nor how they referred you to themselves in the future.

It seems like you have a loose relationship with the truth here.

You'd think the £30,000 bonus Andy was receiving in January might help. Or the £10,000 inheritance that came in December.

That'd buy quite a few visits, wouldn't it?

I don't know any exact figures yet, but we may be receiving some money from the US soon, as part of a relations estate, and it may be in excess of £10K equivalent.
    My question is this.
Would we be better off receiving the money into one of our existing accounts, having it transferred over to sterling, which will involve charges, or would we be best advised to open a US$ account, and keep the mioney in there, and wait until the exchange rate is favourable, because at the moment sterling is quite strong against the $.
Are there any banks who offer the best rates for this kind of thing?
It is all going to happen within the next two or three weeks.
    Thanks.

Have just been informed that I will be receiving around £30K on an investment based performance bonus. I have also been told that I will be liable for CGT on the entire amount.
My question is, how much should I set aside (make a provision to pay it in April I assume), or is there some way that I can invest it again and not have to pay any CGT?
    Cheers.

Couldn't you use some of this money Andy?

I am not sure if that is really relevant afaiaa the OP has not said he doesn't/can't do xyz due to finances, that has been said by others because he is not currently working.

    He said it here.

We are overdrawn every month, yet we visit them, not the other way around. I cannot afford a round trip of 100 miles every week with the cost of fuel.
It costs us £250 a month just so that my wife can get to work.
We get no benefits despite the fact that I worked for 30 years, so if you feel that you have anything constructive to offer then please continue.
