Question for those with older babies: can they drink too much water? My LO loves the stuff and would drink it all the time if I let her - with meals, in between meals, at nap time and in the middle of the night to soothe her (back) to sleep. It never replaces food and doesn't seem to affect her hunger (it just produces very wet nappies!), but should I be restricting the amount she's drinking?

Something that helped me to see her patterns, understand what she needed and plan ahead, was logging her feeds, nappies and sleep. I cannot recommend it enough. I used a normal notepad to start with, now I use an app and it's easier, plus it gives me stats and I can see at a glance how long it has been since the last feed, sleep, nappy.. It takes a bit to customize but once set up it's been a great help. It helped me see how often she needs to sleep and for how long, now she sleeps every hour and a half for about 40 min, before she used to have 2h naps. If I see she has not eaten enough for the day so far, I offer her again the rest of the feed after ten or twenty minutes, etc. Since everything now is on demand, it helped me to see how often she demands certain things, so I now can jump ahead of her and start rocking her to sleep before she cries or have a feed ready before she complains. I've been logging every feed, sleep and nappy for the past three months, but it helps me see if she is having a growth spurt by looking at the sudden increase of feeds or extra long naps afterwards, for example. It has an option for breastfeeding, you put what boob you used, for how long, etc. The app I'm currently using costed a couple of pounds, but there are others that are free, I just wanted this one because of the graphs it has and all the customization that can be done.
What app is it you have? I'm still using a notebook - I think we're on the fourth one now since LO was born!
  • we've had to resort to using the cot instead of the moses basket upstairs - so I've attached that with one side off again as our very el-cheapo co-sleeping solution.
That's what we've done too - I'm glad I'm not the only one.

    Hello :hello:
I will add myself once I can find the list! My son, Jack, was born (eventually) on 19th July 2012. It really has taken me this long to actually sit down at a computer! I was on the birth club thread - if thats what it was called:o.
Hi, welcome. My LO is very similar age to yours - born on 25th July.

I use ibaby feed. It logs feeds and nappies (well diapers, an American inventor I assume). I don't use it for nappies just feeds but it's great and has graphs and you can export the data to a csv file too. It doesn't do sleep too, but, i think there is an isleep one too ifyiu want one for that too :)

Evening all. Hello newbies (both with newborns and those a tad older) its a lovely place so pull up a pew and join us :) :coffee:

Second jabs today, so far, so good, *touches wood* she's sleeping soundly and has been for the last hour or so, she hasn't had much sleep today but she wasn't grouchy with it. Although not sure if it was jabs that led to lack of sleep or DD1 and I at logger heads again :( another bad day. Oh well, early night means I can't over think it. DD1 at preschool tomorrow so I'm planning on some quality time with me an LO. Is pay day too, I used to be excited but tomorrow is first one of SMP...boo... Another reason to remind me why I need to go back to work earlier than planned _pale_

I am using "Baby Connect ", there's a free day trial and then a paid version, which I think it was around £2.99. I used iBaby before that, but t didn't give me clear totals that I could compare, so I changed app. Spend some time customizing it, it's worth it. You have a "home " screen where you can put your preferred shortcuts and below it's a list of recent "events". I wrote a review on Ciao dot co dot uk, search for the app name. What I find useful it's how easy it.is to see when she had her last feed, nappy or nap; plus I can see at a glance with the graph stats if she has been eating or sleeping more than usual, if I need to try to make her drink more, etc. The app is prefilled with lots of categories and types, I just deleted all the ones that were not relevant to me right now, you can add them back at any time. You can send a log of events to your email and you can track more than one child, or more than one person can update the log with different devices. Have a play with the free trial and feel free to ask me anything. It looks like you need to log a lot of stuff, but remember you log only what you want, I ignore most categories and only log feed, naps and nappies. Occasionally, I log milestones, like first chuckle or first time she grabbed a toy, but I ignore categories like activity>having a bath. Most categories have a start and end time, I use only start for nappies and feeds, although I actually do it when she finishes, so when I look at the app I know exactly how long it's been since she's finished doing either thing. For napping, I log the start when she falls asleep and then edit and log when she wakes up as end time, that way it shows me how long she's been sleeping for whilst asleep, and how long she's been awake when she's not sleeping. I try to log everything immediately, so I don't forget. I find it very useful at night, when everything is fuzzy and similar to every other night, so I know that if she's stirring after an hour if feeding, she.probably is dreaming or having wind, so I don't get a feed ready. It has lots of possibilities and options, I only use those that suit me but as I said before it is worth playing with the app, creating your own types of events within categories, deleting those that you won't use, etc.

Mrsharworth, that seems ok to me. My lo was having 50-80 ml until week 4-5, then slowly increased to 90ml and now 100-140ml at 14 weeks, with around 8 feeds a day. I found it useful not to count individual feeds but totals within 24h. The recommendation for me was 90ml at the start and there was no way we were doing that. However, my lo was having normal feeding totals, she was just eating smaller feeds more often. I think we were in 12-14oz a day during weeks 2-3, up to 400ml. I can check the records if you want.

I'm getting the new pram (Mothercare Orb) delivered tomorrow, I cannot wait!!! I also bought a cheap changing bag, shopping clips, Sophie the giraffe teething toy and a travel bag for the old pram, so I can put it in the garage without getting all dusty. :D

    hello all

I am looking for some advice, my lo is 10 days old and I'm wondering how much your lo used to eat? He's having 60-80ml every 3-4 hours.

Once a day he seems to have a couple of hours where he just won't settle without having a bottle every hour, like cluster feeding.

I know the baby knows when they are hungry and will only drink until they are full but does this sound normal?

Any advice is appreciated, as you can tell this is my first.

    :)

My LO did this, I can't quite remember for how long but he would go 2-3 hours between bottles and then early evening he chain bottled! As long as he is putting on enough weight don't worry and just go with the flow.

turtlemouse - I know what you mean about those gummy bumps - his are right at the front of his gums, too far forward to be teeth!

fluffnutter - I remember you were on the other thread, Freddie was born on Jack's due date! I have never known two weeks to draaag so much!

I've not tried neurofen yet, I think I'm going to have to get some in preparation! Metanium is a godsend! His bum was cracked and weepy, once I put metanium on it cleared in a matter of days. I now use the metanium everyday at each nappy change (both 2 for a fiver in boots at the moment) The rash could be due to me changing which nappies he has so we are just finishing this last lot off with the metanium and then seeing how he goes. I was told by a midwife that you don't need a barrier cream with a disposable but now I'm thinking is it best to use one or not? Any thoughts?

nutella - I wouldn't have thought they could have too much water as long as they are getting enough milk and food? Your LO needs a word with mine, he looks at you in disgust if you give him water - he would much rather play with the sippy cup!

When should I get a jumperoo? At what age do little ones start enjoying it? I have a £25 credit on Amazon for the Amazon Family subscription, so I could get the Rainforest or Precious planet one at £59 or the discover and grow for £50. Which one do you have and when did it start tobe used?

Happy for her to have a word, although I don't suppose she's going to want to share! :p

We've used Sudocrem at every nappy change since she was born - if we don't, she gets a rash. I'd say it depends entirely on the baby - some probably need it, others don't.
