  • I quite like the style of the Pazyryk tattoos. I already have a dragon, which was done around this time of year for my 30th birthday (and coincidentally, fixed some extreme pain I had experienced in my back, hip and leg from a prolapsed disc and nerve damage over the course of about 3 hours).

I've been looking and thinking about one for my shoulder since then - it's now ten years since my dragon, so I think it's near time for another.

I've always loved primitive art - so perhaps something in the style of the Pazyryk ones, but in colour, with a view to being able to create a sleeve over time.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

I am currently planning to get a small tattoo on my wrist in memory of my lovely Mother who unfortunately died today after a long illness.

I'm very sorry for your loss, I think memorial tattoos are lovely. =)

I have quite a few tattoos, a whole back piece Escher style, glyphs of my favourite band on my ankles and a ying yang on my stomach.

My next one is going to be a rather large memorial tattoo down my side for my grandad, he was a paratrooper in WW2 so it's going to take inspiration from that, just need someone to design it!

As you've already pointed out, many civilizations have already used that emblem (clearly also guilty of blatant plagiarism) and in itself a two headed eagle isn't unique in the first place. Plus as I've said twice now it's the meaning that I liked (which is completely different to all those you listed) but I guess that concept just goes over your head because you seem to think you look smart by pointing out the obvious that a double headed eagle isn't original. Whether you add another smug reply or not, I don't really care as I won't be wasting any more time reading your posts or replying to you.

All the others made no bones about the fact they copied the original Roman one, as they saw themselves as successors to Rome's Imperial glory. So hardly plagiarism, But having a double headed eagle as the symbol of a fictional empire is just lazy. Thinking the meaning behind it is cool enough for a tattoo is OK, not finding out what others will see it as is a bit sad. I guarantee that many people seeing that will think you are some sort of fascist rather than a sci fi fan of some kind if you ever get it done.

Bet you can't stop yourself reading this any way.

Hello OP, I have the Kipling poem "IF ..." framed upon my wall, I also have all his works at home, he was one of the few Victorian/Edwardian writers whose works still resonate today.

I personally would not have a tattoo, in my 12 years of army service I saw many who had them. There are several I am still in contact with and most seem to regret having them, now they are in their 60's and 70's. It's the wrinkle problem, distorts the pictures I suppose. However, I do not criticise others who do whatever they wish with their own bodies, it is after all the person inside the skin who matters. Take another couple of lines from 'IF ..' to address the critics: -

" If you can bear to hear the words you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools...
    "

Everyone should remember that the original inhabitants of the British Isles were called "Picti" by the Romans when they first attempted to invade. It means "Painted People" because the Celts and the Picts (!) tattoed themselves in order to make them look fierce when they attacked enemies, naked and tattoed, wearing woad from head to foot, with limewash plaster stiffening their hair. They attacked with just a spear or a long sword. Now, how would you like one of those living next door?

Beauty is not just skin deep, it is not only in the eye of the beholder, it really comes from the innate goodness of the person you are talking to.

Picts were only one group of the celtic peoples livng in Britain at the time of the Roman's invasion, and all those Celtic peoples were preceded by the Beaker Folk and others. Also the long sword at the time was not that long, they did have a vey nasty thing called the Gae Bolga or Bellows Spear though.

  • Ahh the Gae Bolg, blessed spear of Cuchulainn given by Scathach (sp?). Damn fine weapon. Sorry, I do love a bit of Celticness :)

Incidentally, the Games Workshop chain will never admit to nicking anything from anyone and will go "weren't us guv" if challenged... ;)
