hi ref your mobile phone, could you phone up the company and see if you inadvertantly took out insurance when you set up the contract? That way if you tell them it is not working then you will be covered?
If not have a look at envirophone. I think they pay money even for phones that don't work. But you would have to email them to ask. Then at least you would get a bit of money back
