The Giving Up Smoking Thread!!

I've always refused to pay for stop smoking aids.
After all I only smoked one a day.
But after the last failed quit, I'm beginning to get annoyed. For instance I had 4 in 3 hours this morning.
I've never told my parents, I try & hide it.
But if I could get free aids, it would be great.
(I am not underage, if thats what you are thinking)
Well done to all who have quit!0 -
Thanks one and all for your thoughts. Yes Jo and IDA I'm doing OK at the moment but I know for an absolute certainty that it's a case of "One Day at a Time" for me. I am a carer for my DW, have problems with my eyes and am a bit hard of hearing. Thank God for a caring Heath Service.
When I was 50 my staff gave me as one of my presents a rather nice ashtray. A month later I gave up smoking but kept the ashtray on my desk as a reminder of what smoking was doing to me. Seven years later I started again. Then in1992 I returned to the land of fragrance, and this time it lasted six years. Since then I have stopped and started numerous times. The reason for this incontinence...........Stress!!
I have diagnosed myself as midly manic depressive and in either state the slightest thing that is not within my comfort zone stressess me out and frustration sets in. Frustration is the killer, ask any psychiatrist. It deprives one of logical perspective and takes you down the road of addiction. When I get stressed my answer is either booze or fags, or both.
Over the years I have had to give up my job, the charities I gave my time and experience to and now only concentrate on family and certain people whose cicumstances are such that they need all the help that they can get.
Well enough of my problems I know all of you out there have got your own, but I thought I would share that with you.
Good luck to you all!!! :A0 -
Hello all, good to have you back IDA and well done not smoking. Shame there was not any grown up entertainment Jo what a shame I thought there was loads to do for all the family but you did not smoke. well done.
I stopped smoking 9 weeks ago. Hooray!
Well done so far Mike. It is very hard work being a carer it does not matter how much you love the person you are caring for it is a big responsibility. I hope you take a little time for yourself to re-charge your batteries and to have little treats as all carers deserve them.
I found that since I have stopped smoking I am much calmer not stressing about when am I going to have my next cig, having 2 before I go into a place where smoking is not allowed wondering how long before I can have the next one. I think all smokers could relate to that.
Think of the benefits and how much better you will feel and richer too.
Take care all,

Just pondering today as I was dealing with one of my cravings - if fags were not "poison" and didn't cost a fortune I would happily still smoke - am I bitter that they are poison and do cost a fortune - yeah probably - but hay I'm a quitter and don't need them anymore!!! Sometimes though the rebellious devil in me would love one - lol - but I'm stronger than that and growing stronger by the day!!
Hope things are going well for everyone - come back with your good or bad news/stories we really need a "catch up"!
Take care all
love and hugs
IDA

Cut down to 1 yesterday, which I was really pleased with.
Will let you know how today goes.
I'm doing it cold turkey, and my hands are going mental0 -
Morning all,
Well done Mike, you're doing really well
How's everyone else doing?
Adzha, well done cutting down to 1 a day! Have a look at the first message on this thread for loads of tips and support. Re. your hands going mental, text TWISTER and your name, house number and postcode to 83040 and Nicquitin will send you a free twister, it's also a stress reliever and 2 of my non-smoking colleagues sent off for one cos they kept nicking mine!!DFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0 -
Thanks,
I'm sat here now, desperate for a fag I'm trying not to.0 -
You will be fine, take each craving as it comes. Your body is getting used to not having nicotene now, put some back in and you'll have the same thing happen a little while afterwards, vicious circle.
Sending hugs
Keep yourself busy and occupied, you will find that you think about smoking a lot more during the early stages of quitting, you thought about it just as much when you smoked but then you just reached for a fag without thinking about it, the reason you notice it more now is cos you're not reaching for that fag. Keep going through this craving, nothing bad will happen to you just remember that.
Let us know how you get onDFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0 -
I just reached for a fag then.
But I held it & thought is this what you really want?
I went out to my smoking place and it was freezing.
I thought no, I want to be warm
I think I have a big mental addiction though.
Any ideas on that?0
