The Giving Up Smoking Thread!!

Hi all,
i hope you're all keeping up the excellent effort to banish the demon weed from your lives! It's good to see that we have some newbies joining our collective quest! Lets have hordes more!
I just got back to work from my hols and i'm chuffed to say that i managed to get through the two weeks without falling off the wagon! Before going on my hols, i feared that the long leisurely days when i would often have nothing to do but relax would tempt me into having a cig, but i was surprised that the cravings never reached critical levels. I always managed to overcome them with a mixture of positive thoughts about all the good things about not smoking (in particular, not smoking around my nephews and nieces which, shamefully, i used to do!) and some breathing exercises. I am still using 2mg gums, but i now only use about 3-4 a day (usually after meals/snacks).
Since quitting, i took up jogging and weight training to help me manage the cravings and not to put on too much weight. When i saw my family over the hols, a number of them remarked (very gratifyingly) that i looked much healthier since the last time they saw me! I am especially pleased at how much better my lungs feel; i can breathe so much more easily.
To all those finding it difficult to stay on the wagon, keep reminding yourselves that it is only inevitable that giving up a habit that was so fixed for many years will take time and effort and it will be difficult....BUT it CAN be done!
BTW....
This monstrous (and laughable/pitiful?) structure appeared recently outside a coffee shop near my workplace! It's nowhere near big enough to shelter the smokers from the rain/wind! They should join our quest!

Silverbullit - huge well done for surviving sun, sand, - there's something else beginning with s but can't quite remember what ..... without the cigs!!:T :T
Love the shelter - can you see it from where you work? It would keep me on the straight and narrow - avoiding that thing!!
Am feeling so chuffed today - went to GPs clinic thingy for spyrometry (lung function test). In the 7 or so weeks since I have given up, my lungs have recovered!!!!! They are functioning at 120% of what they should be at my age and weight!! Infact, they are the age of someone below 20yrs - just wish the rest of me was - DH does too, not that he dare say it!!!:rotfl: :rotfl:
Keep going everyone - we'll do this - if only to avoid those awful shelter things in the winter!!
Tilly

Hi everyone
It looks like I might be quiting soon, and it's not my decision either! My mum is moving in within the next two weeks and she doesn't know I smoke (ok ok, I might be 25 but still fear my mums wrath!) so it looks like I might be quitting. I guess you'll all find out soon enough if I come back screaming and turning the air blue whilst chewing on my own fists :rotfl:
keep up all the good work folks!Debt free since 2014 - now saving for a mortgage deposit :heart2:
This time I'm on top of it! We live and learn :coffee:0 -

Don't worry, my mum doesn't know I smoke either and I'm 35!!
We're all here to support you through it. Maybe have a read of the first post on this thread and see the positives listed that might help convince you.
Good luck and welcome back whenever you're ready :beer:DFW Nerd no. 496 - Proud to be dealing with my debts!!0 -
Hi all, i hope you're all keeping strong...and welcome to the newcomers.
Here's a link to a site that i find very useful in my quest to give up the weed. The advice and information offered is very thought-provoking and it helps to renew my resolve to stay smoke-free. I think others trying to give up will find it helpful.

I think i've regressed back to my nursery days since i'm getting a perverse pleasure from ticking off each smoke-free day on my monthly chart. I'm on to my second chart now! I'll be elected milk-monitor soon! Bring it on...
