Can I jump on board too please? I had my month smoke free 'anniversary' on Christmas day, so have already saved around £100. I've noticed the difference so much already, can already do so much more exercise compared to when I was a smoker!

Hi BB_bunny! Of course you can jump on board, it's always such a pleasure to have successful quitters on, even more so when they've got through that amazing FIRST year!!!!! Many Congratulations on such a great achievement!!! :T :T :T What a terrific difference it makes when you go for it and succeed, fantastic!!!

I achieved my 10th year on Christmas Day too, a GREAT day for us both!!!

Thanks so much for coming on and inspiring all those who need it, it really does help.

    Thanks again.

  • Thanks for your congratulations Sue-UU! It was only my month anniversary, not the full year - but the fact I have gone a full month means the fags have gone for good, and I was smoking anywhere between 10 and 20 a day.

I've found so many positives from giving up smoking.
Firstly - I have not gained weight like I thought I would! :j I was really worried about giving up at work as I had got so friendly with the 'smoking crowd' at my work and I was so regimented with the times of the day I would go for a fag break. I have deliberately given myself a new thing to think about at fag break time - like making myself a cuppa, or doing a little bit of filing... just anything to busy myself.

I do a regular dance class and found, even after a week of quitting, was able to get through the aerobic warm up. This used to leave me really trailing in the class - which was so embarrassing!

I have also found that my sense of smell has got so much better already - I recognised my friend had changed to her old perfume when my friend who is a smoker, sitting next to her, couldn't even smell it!

I know this isn't the best thing to advertise, but it was a pleasant suprise for me... I had already given up by the time of my work christmas do, which was difficult but I did find my hangover wasn't as bad the following day. I still had a hangover, but I didn't have the feeling where my head and upper torso had been wrapped in cotton wool, everything was dry and feeling groggy! I did give up smoking a few years back and I remember this being the case back then aswell!

I bought myself some really fresh orange juice for when I had cravings (which were actually a lot less than I was expecting). Apparently a nicotine craving saps your body of your Vitamin C and sugar (the sugar bit explains why people tend to turn to chocolate), so by having a nice glass of sharp, freshly squeezed orange juice to top up supplies really did help!

4 weeks and 1 day - and will be a month on New Years Day!

So - for years my New Years Resolution has been to give up smoking which left no room for other resolutions - and of course I never achieved it or anything else! Now I have to find another resolution. Maybe now that I have so much more energy and time (because smoking was always my fellow procrastinator) I will do my 'life laundry' and get rid of all the stuff that's been hanging around for too long. I'm so impressed with the DFWs that sell their odds and sods on ebay etc.

To try and beat weight gain (which was another reason I fell off the wagon before) I've enrolled at Weight Watchers and it has certainly kept me monitoring what I eat. (costs around the same as a packet of fags). Satsumas have been a lifesaver - as well as the Vit C, they are fiddly enough for you to forget you were craving a ciggie and low in calories! Sensational!

Unfortunately I still have my cold that started before Christmas, have gone through most of the ailments you possibly get so hope to be on the mend soon. We're having a party on NYE so will HAVE to be better!

Good luck everyone - much love to all and a very happy nicotine-free year!

  • Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say hi and am sure I'll be needing your help and advice on tips to help me stop, its D-day tomorrow for me, its got to be done, and although New Year is a cliche I have to do it, I just cant afford it anymore.....Think am just going to have go cold turkey and see what happens.....I did it once before that way, and gave up for 4 years and then for some stupid reason had another one day and that was 2 years ago....luckily I only smoke about 6 or so a day, and they are all purely habit!

    Good luck everyone
