  • I always thought that you needed to be in the right frame of mind but have been proved wrong.:j

My daughter decided she was stopping smoking in April, she is 18 and it broke my heart that she smoked, especially as I knew as a smoker how it ruins your life being bossed about by the bloody fag. My other two grown up kids have never smoked.

I was so chuffed she wanted to give up I promised there and then to give up with her (smoked for 35 years  ) It was a bit awful for two days thinking "I wasn't ready for it" but after that it made no difference and in fact helped a bit by not worryin and dwelling on it leading up to giving up. If you see what I mean.

I feel wonderful and free instead of being ruled by that awful fag.

We both still don't smoke and the odd craving I have soon passes, I don't dwell on it and I know it will stop in a moment. I don't torture myself keep thinking about fags. You know, oooh I could kill one now etc.

Hi Susie and a very warm welcome to a possible step in changing your life for good!

Don't worry about us being gentle with you, it doesn't pay to be any other way. We'll always be here for you and will support you all the way if you'll be the one to start the quitting. When to start? Yes, sometimes we get the feeling that we're strong enough to have a go, but all too often something triggers us to think deeply about what we owe ourselves and our families in the way of renewed health and saving money. Chances are that if you quit for 4 months before ....you CAN do it for good with the help you'll get .....and your own determination! You also have the tips sheet, there are some good ones, water and exercise being great ones to help.

I know that some of our quitters are doing it via the patches and are having great success, no doubt they'll be along tomorrow to tell you exactly which ones they use and how far they've 'travelled'. Why not pop into your GP and ask for his/her help and advice, you don't have to take it, but it may help more in deciding whether to try or not. One thing to remember: If you stress over money then smoking only causes you more stress, that really is true and you'll be amazed how quickly you find that out.

If you want to take the bull by the horns and go for it then decide whether you need help with patches, pills or are going cold turkey then the choice is yours to quit asap. You may have times when you struggle a little, but come on here and tell us, rant and rave if you wish ....or boast of your hopeful success and tell us how much better you're feeling by smelling much sweeter, tasting food properly again and breathing pure fresh air! It will all help you so much. Then as you progress, you can help others on here too - and that'll help you even more!

Of course you're haunted by your dear Dad having had that wicked illness, my Father-In-Law died of it too and it is so terrible to watch them, during it, and at the end. That was one of the reasons that helped me quit Susie, why not make it yours and free yourself from that awful haunting feeling ........I'm quite sure your Dad will help you through it all too, I know my FIL did for me! :)

Make a pledge when you're ready and we'll help you all we can, I promise!

Well I have had the appointment with the Pharmacist at Tesco and it was really good. She tested my Carbon-monoxide levels and as i havent smoked now since Monday evening, they were the same as a non-smoker! woo hoo! She also tested my blood pressure which was slightly high but said that was to be expected as I was slightly nervous about seeing her. She has also given me some nicotine patches which she said i should be off within about 4 weeks as each week, she will lower the dose. I know i said i wasnt using anything whcih was working ok, its just i wasnt sleeping very well and getting really ratty so i think the patches will help, even if i dont use them all the time.
Hope everyone else is doing well, thanks for everyones support, cant believe Im over 72 hours in now!

Brilliant news Jemima!!! I'm so pleased it went that well, all these things help us even more with quitting and I'll bet you almost felt you were walking on air with a really big smile on your face after you came out! :D Just 3 days in and the carbon-monoxide levels of a non smoker!! :T Good luck with the patches, so long as whatever helps us through, works, then who cares about using it. The main thing is that you QUIT!!! :j

  • Hi all...

BUMP!!! (that's the sound of LP falling off the wagon in JULY)

I'm SO sorry guys. At the end of July after 3 months smoke free I fell off the wagon.

But I am back again to quit. *sigh*

Have reset my Quitnet logs and I'm back at square one again.

    Sorry guys... *sniff*

Hiya LP, great to see you here again! I sort of thought you might have fallen, but... not to worry, it's happened to others too. No need at all to be sorry as the main thing is that you're getting back on the wagon once more. How far did you get last time LC and are you taking anything to help you or going cold turkey?

Keep on quitting and who knows THIS may just be the time you see it through and conquer the 'orrible weed!!!

Good luck and we're here for you.

Congratulations k8te, your hubby too!!!!! :T That first week is a real milestone and really gets you to a massive high after reaching it. I'm glad you've celebrated it, especially with the children as it shows them how proud you are of each other's achievements and gives them the chance to share in that pride and I'll bet they're thrilled at your success.

Keep strong k8te and hubby.... and keep looking ahead to that horse (ssh ;)) our lad & I had one that we shared in and it was great!

  • Chasing the wagon and need a hand up please !

I am so tired of this smoking rubbish, I am paying £3+ a day to do something that I don't even like. Punctuating the day with these nasty smelly things, because I think I deserve it ? How silly is that ?

Can make as many excuses as I like to justify it but deep down I know I have to stop.

I've done it before and I'll do it again, but this time for good. I'm in a strange emotional place and smoking is part of that reason, I'm all my children have left, I have to start taking care of myself.

Sorry if this sounds like a rant but I'm cross with myself for ever starting again, thinking I could have just one. No more slavery.

Six left, will buy no more. Might even let the kids throw them, jump on them tear them up, that's how much they hate it.

Hope I don't bore you all over the next few weeks :)

  • Just wanted to check in again and send out all my support to people just starting on their journey. I've quit now for 12 weeks and I know I'm not completely cured (don't think I ever will be!) but my willpower grows everyday making it easier to push those cravings to one side and get on with my life.

Some peoples cravings disappear quite quickly but mine stay with me wherever I go, I have just conditioned myself not to have one. I know if I have even a drag of one I will be hooked again.

Something happened today that made me label myself as a non smoker after all these weeks. I ordered some jeans from ebay and when I opened them this morning I thought 'God, these stink, what's that smell?!' Of course, it was smoke. The lady who sold me them probably thought they were clean as she sat there puffing away. They are now in my washing machine because I could never have worn them smelling that bad! It hit me that I must have smelt like that constantly when I smoked, my hair, clothes and skin.

I treat myself now to perfume that I could never justify buying before (Very Valentino, my fav!!), my hair smells of shampoo not smoke and I buy freshly scented fabric conditioner which I can still smell on my clothes after a day!

Well, I've probably bored everyone now so I'll go back to my cleaning but before I go I want to congratulate everyone who has decided to quit, it's not an easy decision to make but it does get easier I promise x
