    Hi all,

I've been smoking since I was 10yrs old so haven't really known a life without it. Since I had my son 2.5yrs ago, I've been trying to quit without much success. You'd think being pregnant would have made me quit but I smoked all the way through I'm afraid.

I've tried hypnotherapy, patches (allergic to the adhesive), nasal spray, gum and the inhaler thingy. None of them were enough to keep me away. I cut down and down and down - the suddenly I'm right back up again. One week I'll smoke ten a day then the next I realise I've gone through 30 out of nowhere.

I'm a lone parent on benefits - I can't even afford to smoke!

And my newest low has to be today as I'm sat here contemplating putting my telly on ebay because I'm overdrawn. Seriously now? I can afford to smoke but I'm thinking of selling my TV? This is ridiculous.

As there only about £1 in my purse, any advice on how to jack this in when I finish today's cigs? My absolute biggest problem is how to get out of bed in the morning. I'm terrible, the only cig I smoke in the house is my morning one and I can't seem to get myself to get out of bed without it. I think I need a replacement for a while as it's a pyschological thing.
Elle, hopefully you’ll be able to find some reserves of will power to help yourself on the road to stopping.

The good thing is that it appears to be only one cigarette which is holding you back from stopping, you don’t seem to be too worried about the other 9/29 of the day, that gives us something to work on.

That first cigarette is seen as an insurmountable hurdle by many people but when you apply a little bit of logic to it you can see the hurdle getting lower and lower, for example, before you smoked did you have any trouble starting your day without putting a heap of harmful drugs into your system? Logically there is no reason for struggling to get the day started without having a smoke, but our brains had us convinced for years that we did-time has come for us to fight back! As I said a few days ago to Lula Hula, think of the pros and cons for smoking that first cigarette, be totally honest with yourself and list them out on a piece of paper, you’ll soon see how logical that first cigarette is!

When thinking of stopping smoking don’t be focusing on the negatives, think about all the good things that can come of it, your son will be able to grow up not thinking of smoking as the normal thing to do and may not start, you’ll find you have more money to spend on him and yourself, you’ll notice your health starting to improve, etc. Basically, there is nothing bad that can come from stopping smoking!

I’d suggest reading through this thread, picking up tips and hints along the way and taking in the information contained about the other aids available to help you stop smoking, Zyban or Champix. As a lone parent you may be able to get those on a free prescription either from your doctor, nurse or even pharmacist.

I think the main point I’m trying to make is, DON’T FLOG YOUR TELLY, as ex-smokers, smokers, people trying to stop we can all empathise with your situation as we've all been to the bottom on our journeys to stopping smoking!

Went to the pub yesterday, i wish i hadnt i got so drunk i havent had a drink since january, and last night i left my partner, told him it was over. Stayed at a friends house and woke up this morning like oh no what have i done, b l o o d y drink i think i might just become tee total as i always regret things i have said and done the next day, but on a good note i didnt smoke despite getting totally legless, and me and my partner have kissed and made up.
Feel like !!!!!! today though but not as bad as if i had a smoke yesterday, i would have been so angry with myself.

Three weeks, 18 hours, 19 minutes and 47 seconds. 435 cigarettes not smoked, saving £54.41. Life saved: 1 day, 12 hours, 15 minutes.
