    Hi all,

I've been smoking since I was 10yrs old so haven't really known a life without it. Since I had my son 2.5yrs ago, I've been trying to quit without much success. You'd think being pregnant would have made me quit but I smoked all the way through I'm afraid.

I've tried hypnotherapy, patches (allergic to the adhesive), nasal spray, gum and the inhaler thingy. None of them were enough to keep me away. I cut down and down and down - the suddenly I'm right back up again. One week I'll smoke ten a day then the next I realise I've gone through 30 out of nowhere.

I'm a lone parent on benefits - I can't even afford to smoke!

And my newest low has to be today as I'm sat here contemplating putting my telly on ebay because I'm overdrawn. Seriously now? I can afford to smoke but I'm thinking of selling my TV? This is ridiculous.

As there only about £1 in my purse, any advice on how to jack this in when I finish today's cigs? My absolute biggest problem is how to get out of bed in the morning. I'm terrible, the only cig I smoke in the house is my morning one and I can't seem to get myself to get out of bed without it. I think I need a replacement for a while as it's a pyschological thing.

Hi Elle, I understand where you are coming from totally. For a long time I was also a single parent on benefits and went without other things just so I could smoke. I am on day 4 of being a non-smoker and am using patches to help me get through. It is hard but you really need your willpower. If you have that then you have already fought half the battle. The morning cigarette was for me the hardest to give up. It wasnt so much the one cigarette but the other 4 that followed it in the space of 90 minutes. Today, i have got out of bed and had the same feeling of loss i had the first day i gave up but i keep reminding myself that i want to be debt free and the money used on cigarettes at 140 a month will definately come in handy. My kids have been nagging me for ages to quit and they are really happy that i am trying. I dont want to break their hearts and fail. Also, it is a novelty to smell my hair at the end of the day and it still smells of lovely shampoo from the morning! The downside is I have discovered my taste buds are loving custard cream biscuits (I nearly ate a whole packet yesterday). I cant afford to put on weight but hopefully when i go back to work tomorrow (ive just had a nice week off) I will be able to get back on track with my eating. Set yourself a date elle and do everything in your power to overcome the cravings. Someone told me this saying which i have been saying to myself over and over :

"if you crave a cigarette then have one and the craving will go away. However, if you crave a cigarette and dont have one, the craving will still go away"

I like that quote as to me it asks why we bother at all to smoke.

Good luck elle and to everyone else who has recently stopped and to those about to stop next week. YOU CAN DO IT!! ;)
