The Giving Up Smoking Thread!!

I can only echo what monkey says. My story is the same (except I read Neil Casey and had smoked for a few years longer
). Someone recently pointed out that in a couple of weeks I will have not smoked for a year. I would have thought that unbelievable before I read the book. More unbelievably, I have NO DESIRE WHATSOEVER to smoke. My mind is free and its a fantastic feeling
Get one or both books olive - at worst you will have wasted a few quid - nothing compared to the money spent on cigs
HTH:dance:There's a real buzz about the neighbourhood :dance:0 -
But I know I have to give up so went for the gum.
part of the mental attitude, olive. You are 'giving up' absolutely nothing whatsoever!!! You're stopping smoking. Don't think of it as 'giving up'
Now, who stated this thread - must get them to change the title......
Edit : errr, jo......?:dance:There's a real buzz about the neighbourhood :dance:0 -
What a busy afternoon you've had - welcome Olive welcome to our happy camp! You can be sure of non judgemental support and endless, much needed advice. We really are in it together! I like you had noticed the thread for some time but had deliberately not visited it, was avoiding anything to do with stopping smoking. But we set our date and here I am 2 weeks 3 days later, this forum has so helped me and the people are lovely too! :A

Would just like to say well done to all of you still here and welcome to the new ex-smokers! I haven't been on here for a few days because it's only a week now till the end of term and it's a bit busy at work (school) at the mo.
I struggled a bit last weekend, I seem to do better while I'm at work (obviously) as you certainly can't smoke in a primary school!! but the weekends are a bit harder. I'm actually quite anxious about the six weeks holidays...will I be able to cope?
I'm wearing the patches and I've had a couple of chews of the gum when it's been tough but I'm trying to stay away from them because I'm just giving myself more nicotene and it'll be harder when I go down on to the lower strength of patches.
Anyway, so far I've not smoked 282 ciggies, saved £62.78 and 23hrs 30 mins of my life AND oh has now quit and has the meter thingy on his desktop too!!
Hope everyone is trying to stay positive and I'd just like to mention how much better I feel knowing that there are soooo many people in the same boat as me and we're in it together. Thanks everyone.

Hi all
welcome Olive, i just decided to post on this thread a few days ago cos like yourself i was scared of stopping and have found everyone really supportive.
Like a few others have had another wobbly day - no cigs though which is the main thing.
I seem to have so much more time on my hands at home - i have even tidied my kitchen drawer where i shove all the post!! Has anyone else found this?
Well done everyone keep up the good work xx
Three days, 11 hours, 13 minutes and 11 seconds. 69 cigarettes not smoked, saving £18.55. Life saved: 5 hours, 45 minutes.:j Stopped smoking - 2nd Jan 09:j0 -
Evening All and welcome to Olive - you'll love it on here, everyone, without exception is brilliant.
Well, had a truly dreadful day - my Mum lives with us because she is disabled and collapsed this morning - 999 and blue flashing lights job. We sat with her for 4 hours in casualty whilst they sorted out the emergency stuff and organised a bed for her - all I kept thinking of was how on earth was I going to get through this without a ciggie? It wasn't helped by a nurse coming in a smelling of the stuff - she did look at me strangely when I drew in a deep breath!!!
I was so bad that my violently anti smoking OH offered to go and get some for me - BUT I resisted *pause for a moment to allow feeling of smugness to flow*.:A
Anyway, once Ma was stabilised and safely on a ward, two of the auxilliary nurses let me sit with them whilst they smoked and I happily sniffed! I really am going to have to get help (psychological or psychiatric) about this sniffing strangers - beginning to behave like my dog!!!
I have to say is that what kept me on the straight and narrow was the thought of coming on here and either confessing or just downright lying
So, keep it up peeps, we really are something.
Take care,
TillyThanks to this fantastic site and it's amazing people, we have paid over £63, 000 off - just over half way!!!:T THANK YOU:T0 -
I'm going to buy Allen Carr on my way home, definately. I know a couple of people that have given up after reading that book. Thanks for the recommendation, its good to know that it's worked for people, there's so much out there its hard to know what to choose in a way! At the pharmacy she was like, what do you want, 'inhalor, patches, gum, microtabs' and I was just thinking 'I want to be able to smoke!'. But I know I have to give up so went for the gum.
But you know what - there's nothing to it other than having a good reason not to smoke. There's nothing to it. I think these NRT companies are worse than the cigarette companies. There must be a million adverts on TV each day all making quitting look like the most terrifying thing you can do. It's not that hard once you've made your mind up and have a good reason to do it.
For me it wasn't the money or health. It was just the fact that I hate the thought that £4 of the £5 a packet is tax. Sod that for a game of soldiers.0 -

Hiya all, why were we scared or nervous about giving up smoking? I was the same. I am finding it fairly easy to give up and just hope that I can keep to it, but I am not going cold turkey and I am so in awe of the people giving up that way. I wonder who in the long term is going to last the course and I think it will be the people who have the determination and strength of character to go cold turkey.
I went to the gym yesterday to be inducted or to have induction? Anyway some young lad showed me how the stuff worked and now I will be able to go on the stuff on my own. One of the things I went on was a bike and I burned off 10 calories. I was so chuffed. I told my daughter in law she laughed and said it was a half of a digestive. She is wrong isn't she?
Take care all, lovely to meet the newbies,
ILAI live in a small drinking town with a fishing problem0
