    Hi again
Was beginning to feel very irrational indeed so am glad I checked back in.
The money saving aspect is a big motivator. I get (used to get!!) cigarettes cheaply so 20 a day cost me around £60 a month. But I want to join a gym, so stopping smoking plus gym membership will still save me £30 a month (to go towards credit card bill!)

I'm reluctant to use any NRT - as a 'graduate' ;) of Allan Carr's I know smoking is nicotine addiction, & it takes about 3 days for nicotine to leave your system, so I figure I'm better off just going cold turkey.

I am still fighting my cravings. Problem is I have nothing to do today as hospital visiting hours don't start until 5pm. I'm in my parents house with just this laptop keeping me sane!! I feel a bit light headed but on the plus side I would have smoked at least 5 or 6 cigarettes by this time, & so far I have had NONE!! Woohoo!!
Proud to be a moneysaver :)

I'm having the light-headed dizziness stuff too, also insane hunger. I am trying to drink lots of water to stop me eating but it's not really working. So far today I have replaced about 4 cigarrettes with about 1000 calories :o

Yes get rid of all smoking paraphenalia - lighters ashtrays etc
Get yourself a small jar and every day putin the money you would have spent on cigarettes - count it at end of week/month etc and see how much you save
Go to chemist- boots etc and ask for advice - patches gum etc

Tomatoes - don't know if this is true but supposed to help the nicotine cravings and they are low calorie?!

Amazingly, for me, I'm not craving food.... yet!! I can feel my jaw is really tense bit like chewing gum without the gum

The most irrational thing is thinking "actually this is quite easy, I like giving up" and that being some sort of 'excuse' to have just one cigarette as I can give up again

MFD - I kinow I will get the insane hunger too, but I think I would rather put on a few pounds that die horribly of a disease from smoking. I should probably post a photo of my dad, if you saw his current state it would put you off for life - except the stupid irony being it hasn't put me off until now. God I feel so dumb sometimes. Anyway, we CAN do it and it can only get better

Hi my fathers daughter and GFN-welcome. You have indeed come to the right place. Well done for making the decision in the first place. I had my last cigarette on 1st December 2007-nearly 3 months ago. I have 'stopped' several times and restarted several times too. When I decided to stop again the only thing that was putting me off was the cough that appears as your lungs clear themselves-but that was nothing compared to the chest infections I have suffered when I was a smoker and I had pneumonia twice when I was a smoker-I have also had pleurisy -again, while I was a smoker. I stopped smoking for 6 months last year (I went cold turkey) and stupidly started again-so after another 3 months smoking-and my chest feeling tight and my asthma being exacerbated I decided if I wanted to live longer and enjoy my children for as long as possible-well into adulthood!!!-I would have to stop. So I have stopped smoking and I am not fit by any means but I am alot healthier. My children are happier, I don't stink like an ashtray and don't have to go outside come rain, hail, snow, or blow 'just for a fix'!!!

    Remember Bricking It?!

I put on 10 pounds due to over eating but the mad temptation to put everything edible in my mouth has gone, and i have started jogging, so hopefully it will come off in a few weeks.
Its true, a few pounds is def better than being a stinky smoker, controlled by a horrible addiction, being ripped off ona daily basis and ruining our lovely teeth, hair and skin!

    Thanks tattycath :)

Can you tell I have nothing to do & am therefore watching this thread avidly LOL!

Still smoke free! I almost don't mind if I have to cough up gunk while my lungs recover. I have had the flu for 2 weeks now and although it's finally clearing it has gone to my chest & I am hacking like a good 'un anyway. In fact as I haven't smoked this morning I am coughing less, so there's a bonus.

My OH has just emailed me from work to say how proud he is & how he will support me while I quit (he's a non smoker). :) I am really looking forward to seeing him this weekend without worrying about how much I smell, or frantically brushing my teeth or standing outside in the cold/rain while he is in the warm, & then feeling stupid & embarrassed that I had to go & smoke. So many postives... I'm trying to stay focused & am drinking water to help with the cravings.

Thank you to everyone who has posted to offer support and advice, it really does help.

EDIT to add: We must have cross posted skintbutsmiling ...... a few pounds of weight will be easy to shift. If you have the determination & willpower to quit smoking, weight loss will seem like a doddle!!
