  • Good morning everyone. Hope everyone is well and ready to face the day. I am heading off shortly for a wee break with my DH. Will report when I get back how I coped without the dreaded weed. Best of luck to you all.

Good luck Franco! Maybe with a few days away there will be lots of things you can focus your thoughts on so you'll get through it. Don't forget it's only 3 days you need to "cope". After that you'll be drug free!!! :j

Jo, I think the scariest thing to admit to yourself when you're quitting is that you will NEVER be able to have another puff ever again. I read somewhere it's like a grieving process and like someone has died!! But honestly, once the nicotine is out of your system, you don't NEED another puff because the cravings have gone and you feel so lovely and calm!!

I have accepted that even 10 years from now I will not be safe if I have just one puff. It's like being an alcoholic I'm afraid. Once you become a nicotine addict you will never be able to take a single puff without re-awakening that nicotine monster. Once he's woken up, it'll be another 72 hours before I'm clean again. Every time I've tried to have just "one or two" a day when I've quit before, I've been back up to 20 a day within days. It's your body's natural reaction not to want to suffer and to want to satisfy your craving and stay at that level - not have massive highs and lows every day. That's just not comfortable.

  • Hi everyone!
Tomorrow is my quit day, I am actually looking forward to it. (please remind me of this after a few days of cold turkey!)
Just out if interest, what do you do with the money you save? I was thinking I would pay it off a credit card, after everyday I do, online so I would see a daily result for doing it.
    Anyway wish me luck!!!!

Wishing you tons of good luck. Cold turkey is SO the best way and think positively - it's just 72 hours 'til that nicotine is GONE and you'll feel great.

mumzy - that first thing in the morning urge feels stronger than the rest because you've had a few hours asleep without satisfying the nicotine craving. It's your body telling it's overdue it's drug fix. I found it helped to picture the craving or urge as a little brown nicotine monster that I smiled at, took a deep breath and ignored.

I know what it's like to use a ciggie to "wake me up". Truth is, once you quit, you have such a lovely sleep - and your body is so calm and free of chemicals - that you naturally wake up feeling so much more energetic. You don't need that little help.

I'll be honest, I was absolutely TERRIFIED of quitting and I never thought I'd last a day. I smoked every ciggie I had on a Sunday night so I didn't have any left for Monday morning (make the most of the time I'd been asleep to bag a few "clean" hours ... heh heh). I said to myself if I really couldn't bear it I could always buy some at lunchtime but I'd take a deep breath and really try my hardest. Well I managed it for 3 days and on the 4th day I woke up and that urge had COMPLETELY GONE! I am not joking, I felt calmer than I'd done in years. That was 3 weeks ago and I have no intention of ever lighting up again. I'd smoked 30 a day for 22 years and I thought life would be over without my ciggies. I thought it would be like my best friend had died. But since quitting I've never been happier. I'd forgotten how calm life is without them and how much panic they CAUSE, not satisfy.

I also have to say that NOBODY who knows me expected me to stay quit. 3 girls at work just didn't believe it was that easy and I told them to read WhyQuit.com and they have ALL now quit cold turkey for over a week. My partner cannot believe how calm I am and how I am not bothered that he's sat 5 feet away from me, smoking away. We also have my stepson and his girlfriend in the lounge too this evening, and they are both smoking too. I don't mind that either (except they smoke proper ciggies, not roll ups like my OH, and the ciggies do smell pretty bad once you've kicked the habit ;) )

All I can promise you is it isn't anywhere near as bad as you'll think it'll be!
