The Giving Up Smoking Thread!!

Whilst there are many benefits to giving up smoking and I wouldn't want to discourage anyone from doing it, there is also a 'down' side, and it's this:
(verified by my GP) For the 1st few weeks or maybe even 6 months after quitting, you will probably be too busy fighting the cravings to notice, then after a certain period, your nasal intolerance will dramatically increase. Other people - smokers - will start to smell awful to you. Not just the smoke that they blow in your direction, but their breath and their clothes.
Unfortunately, your body will have an increased sensitivity to the dislike of the smell of cigarette smoke, which will be greater than the sensitivity that you would have if you'd never ever smoked!
After a while, you may come to despise smokers. This is not a "holier than thou" reaction, or a "I've quit, why can't you" reaction. It's a natural reaction brought on by heightened sensitivity, and it's a medical condition, not a moral one.
Believe me, I can detect a smoker from a distance of over 30 metres, and it's an affliction I can well do without, but my doctor says that it's unlikely it will ever go away. I have not smoked (ever) in over 20 years!
What do I do about it? Avoid smokers like the plague! It's the only sensible defence I have. There's no point in moralising and criticising smokers for their habit (although I will complain bitterly if a smoker is being unreasonable in their behaviour) apart from action if a smoker deliberately breaks the Law. I have a No Smoking notice in my car and some in my home, which I will enforce regardless.
Again, I would urge every smoker to quit and don't be put off by my comments above, but be aware that your body will exhibit changes and learn to recognise them, before they make you feel bitter.

Hi Alan  welcome to the thread
It is true that when I've given up in the past, after a certain period of time cigarette smells are so awful, especially an ashtray yuck!
Although I personally think that your smell improves anyway, we know this as suddenly clean clothes smell nicer and food smells different so I don't know if this is a medical condition. But whatever it is, if it's just fag smoke and smokers that I can't stand the smell of and everything else smells wonderful then BRING IT ON:D:D

As my GP said, your sensitivity to tobacco smoke is definitely heightened, when you quit. So I guess we get a double whammy - extra sense of smell in general and extra sense of smoke - Yeuk!!:(

Hello everyone,
Please don't shout at me as I have only just found the courage to come back on here!My last post here was on the 9th September (I stopped smoking on 4th August) and I'm afraid that I blew it - and the smoke ... I started again
I am now smoking as much as ever and I hate myself for it.
When I stopped in August I started on niquitine patches and was doing fine, but during that time I had gone back home and stayed there for almost 2 weeks and it didn't bother me. After coming back, living on my own I found it extremely hard and then I just started again!
Sorry, but I feel I've really let myself down.0
