The Giving Up Smoking Thread!!

sometimes I find myself looking longingly ... can someone please explain why I would still desire :
Ok - here goes.
Suppose, as a baby, you get startled by a dog. From then on, whenever you see a dog, you get scared. Why? Because the brain has associated dogs with getting hurt. Even as an adult, if you see a dog from a hundred yards away, you tense up. The brain is invoking a survival technique, telling you to get the heck away from the dog. Irrational, yes. But the that is the brain's best guess, from the information it has
The brain has a remarkable survival instinct. Remember those people jumping out of the WTC on 9/11? There is NOW WAY they would normally do it, but the brain rationalised that that was a better option then staying, so.... they jumped.
Ok. You had your first ever cigarette. An hour or so later, you felt a little bit anxious, a little tense. Your brain doesn't think much of it. Then you have your second ever cigarette. What do you know? The tension and anxiety is eased (even though it is caused by the cigarette, it also eases it alittle, for an hour or so). The brain has now associated the cigarette with the easing of the anxiety and tension. WALLOP!! You're hooked. Even after you've stopped, your brain still tells you that whenever you get tense, a cigarette will sort that out. This is why there are soooo many cigarette ends outside hospitals, particularly cancer wards!! FACT.
What you have to do is to change your thinking. Unfortunately, you can't just flick a switch to do it. This is why hypnotherapy works. It goes straight to the subconcious part of the brain that makes all these decisions for you
Now, if only I had the answer to how to retrain your subconcious brain easily, I would be a very rich man......:dance:There's a real buzz about the neighbourhood :dance:0 -
