airlines tend to reimburse essential items in the case of baggage delay on an outbound flight and nothing for the return
This assumes you receive the baggage (eg nothing due)
If classed as 'lost' (usually 21 days) you will claim for the loss from the airline (capped amount)
  • Hi all,

In August I was due to fly from Basel to Newcastle with a transfer in Dusseldorf. I was supposed to arrive in Newcastle at 11am. The first flight from Basel to Dusseldorf was delayed which meant I missed my connecting flight.

I was given the option of a later flight to Newcastle (arriving at 10pm) or a flight to Manchester arriving at 15.20pm. I was told if I opted for the Manchester flight and booked a train ticket to Newcastle from Manchester Airport they would reimburse the cost of this which was £76.

Once home I put in a claim to the airline for compensation and to reimburse the cost of the train ticket with the receipt attached.

They have replied this morning saying they will pay 250 euros compensation but that they cannot reimburse any additional costs.

Is this worth pursuing to try and get my £76 back or should I just take the 250 euros and move on?

    Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks.
  • Hi, I recently returned from Saudi with 2 colleagues. Our trip home to Spain took us almost 3 days. It started with a delay on our original flight from Saudi to Dubai. On arrival at Dubai we were informed that we were no longer booked on the connecting flight to Madrid due to the delay and that we would be flying out the following day on the same flight at the same time. We were put up in a hotel food etc paid for. The following day we flew from Dubai to Madrid. On arrival we were informed once again that we were not booked on the connecting flight to Almeria and that we would be flying out the following day at the same time, same flight..we were put up in a local hotel food etc paid for. We finally arrived in Almeria and got home eventually early evening. My question is, although we were "looked after" we lost almost 3 days due to no fault of our own. Would we be eligible for compensation from the airline(s) or does this fall outside the regulations.

Any help and or advice greatly appreciated

It is worth pursuing. The regulation quite clearly states the airline is responsible for getting you to your original destination.
Download the regulation and quote the relevant article, 8 I believe.

You'll need to give us a lot more info... Was the entire trip booked on one ticket? Who was the airline? What was the reason given for them having "unbooked" you from the subsequent flights?

Hi JPears, was this a response to my post or DavidJL's?
  • Hi Peter_333,

Yes the flights were all pre booked by a travel company under the same booking reference. The airlines are Emirates and Iberia. At the Emirates desk i was told by the clerk that we were no longer booked on the flight due to the delay from Saudi.

Probably still going to need a more detailed explanation... What was the reason for the original Saudi delay? How long was the Saudi delay? Did the Saudi delay mean you missed you connection in Dubai, or could you reasonably still have made the connection? Was the flight from Dubai to Madrid on Emirates or on Iberia? When you finally made it to Madrid, did they give you any reason why you weren't booked on the next available flight to Almeria? Was there definitely a flight to Almeria that day? Could you have reasonably made the connection to Almeria if you were booked on it?

Your original delay was on a flight and airline that aren't responsible for any EU 261 compensation. In addition, if your Dubai to Madrid flight was with Emirates, that flight does not fall under the realm of EU 261 compensation.

People far more knowledgeable that I will need to weigh in on whether the knock-on effect of the original delay is grounds for claiming compensation from Iberia.
