As long as any charges where within 6 years then they can be claimed, see martins article for help in doing this, but yes as long as you/the bank can find out your account details, and its within the 6 year time limit it can be claimed back.

    Hi all

Just really need a bit of help and info. I did have an HSBC account - defaulted on my loan payments June 2004, then bank were really unhelpful so I closed the account. Got a payment plan on the defaulted amount and cleared it last year with inheritance money.

Anyway - finally got around to requesting bank statments, sent off £10 cheque as per Martin's instructions.

I guess what I really need to know is:
How long will it take to get statements back? Then I have to write again requesting refund? How long is that likely to take, and do the banks just pay or argue it with you?

I'm sorry if this has already been covered elsewhere - this is just really stressing me and I don't know why - perhaps I need a good kick:embarasse

    Dear Forum,
Can Bank Charges be reclaimed from an account that was closed in Dec 2003. I have statements covering the last 6 years showing charges I have incurred?
    Thanks in anticipation!

Can anyone tell me if you can claim back bank charges if the account is already closed? I was with HSBC a few years back and I may be a millionaire if I can....

If so how do I go about claiming it back from them? and how does the whole process work? Would it be six years back from now or the time I held the account?

Excuse me for being slightly thick with these matters!

Any help would be much appreciated!!!

    See the above link.

If you go via the Financial Ombudsman it's 6 years from your first letter of complaint. If you go via the court then it's 6 years from the date you issue the court claim.

  • I was wondering if it is possible for me to try and reclaim bank charges from my old bank account which is now closed.

No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.
