The point is quite simply this - the UK has a long distance from North - South with large differences in climate in different parts due to several factors including latitude, air currents, sea temperatures and sea currents.

I've just been looking at reviews on Winter Tyres and their stopping distances are worst than the summer tyres at temperatures above 7 deg c. Is any government really going to legislate that "Thou Shalt Make Your Car More Dangerous To Drive" - because this is exactly what they would be doing in parts of the country, if they were to bring in such a law.

Yes we get your point, now move on.

Teach people to drive to the !!!!!!! conditions and they won't get caught out by longer stopping distances. It's cold, it's maybe wet and it'll take you longer to stop. So allow for it.
I thought I was a no .... the responses on this thread made me change to a yes because people simply don't want to realise that for several months a year the UK is cold enough to warrant either all weather or winter tyres, depending where in the UK you live.

    example:
we had days in December where the temperature hit 18 C! What days do you suggest I change my tyres?

It is or should be obvious that the road does not attain the highest air temperature in winter. The lowest air temp is usually between 05:00-06:00 and the road lags behind that. Hence at 08:00 the road is pretty much the same temp as the lowest temp....

On average and choosing the most southerly place the met office has records the average minimum is hardly above 7 degrees... air temp may well reach 18 during the early afternoon but the road is still much colder.

People keep arguing what the MAXIMUM temperature was, not the road temperature they are driving on.

If people do not actually realise and more important allow themselves to realise that the conditions despite the MAXIMUM reaching 18 on occasion still merit All Weather Tyres then I don't see how people in general will somehow learn this?

For most of the population of the UK All Weather Tyres are appropriate for Nov-Thru-March ... there may be places on the Scilly Isles or Jersey where its Dec-thru-Feb.... but for others like Aviemore, Winter tyres are appropriate Nov-thru-March
What days do you suggest I change my tyres?
Sometime in November to sometime in March to All Weather

The thing is this: - you can protest all you like that at temperatures below a certain temperature the Winter compound tyres are better - That does not make the normal tyres unsafe. I drive 20k miles a year - to date (Touch wood) I have never had an accident - are you seriously telling me my car is unsafe at the moment because it does not have winter tyres?
Then again, I refer you to post #27.
