Does the law need changing vote

Options
Do you think the law needs to be changed regarding using winter tyres between October and March? I was a believer that winter tyres where a con and that snow very rarely falls in this country, I thought summer tyres would do, but after buying some winter tyres on a wim I love them. I can not wait for it to snow on Sunday 10th (for you later comers) so I can drive around my village and help people out.

My vote is yes the law needs changing and before any of you get on you horse and say it cost money and you must be loaded, sorry to say we are a family that are just managing to get by at the moment but my family safety come first.

BIG YES :j

I'm tempted to say yes but in reality no.
The main issue is most people don't seem to understand winter tyres are not 'for snow' but for colder temperatures.

Stopping distances on a cold 5 degrees wet road are very significantly different as is road holding.

It is ignorance as to the purpose that prevents people understanding, they can then make an informed decision.

The question is HOW to overcome the ignorance, government paid for advertising? Make it part of the test? Make it a practical part of the test?

If it was legislated correctly it would actually make it cheaper eventually....

Another way to look is if you get caught speeding you may get sent on a speed awareness course if the police think its more appropriate to points. Do those courses result in safer driving? Of course some may actually come away safer drivers and others not? Some may have been sent and in reality their driving wasn't unsafe anyway... (say doing 90 on a empty well lit motorway in a well maintained car that the german police would regard as safe at 150mph on a unrestricted autobahn.

In the same way, some people might already know their car handling and stopping is degraded and have adjusted. Others (probably most) don't realise the difference 5 degrees makes to summer tyres.

Perhaps some are aware an choose all-weather instead of dedicated summer tyres?

It's 8c today here it got down to 6 over night, the BBC promise 5 during the day and 3 overnight on Monday and Tuesday. We have had 0 days with snow on the ground this year. Should I be forced to buy winter tyres?
  • Well as I don't know anyone rich enough, let alone daft enough to use summer tyres in the UK I think I will stick with all weather tyres thanks.
  • No, you just need to drive according to the conditions and not rely on some "magic" tyres.

I've never used winter tyres and in the 25 years I've been driving never needed them.

What colour of car did you buy? Perhaps we can change the law to make other people buy that shade too?
You would be very hard pressed to find a stockist of summer tyres in the UK, we have all weather/all seasons or winter tyres. The latter being bought by people still convincing themselves they need them instead of getting decent tyres in the first place and driving appropriately to the conditions.

Make a law that only 4 x 4s are allowed. That would please the greenies.
