Still on idea of buying greenhouses I have moved quote below from another post as this seems a better place for it.
Anyway, I have recently won a competition and the prize is the services of a gardener for 8 hours and £250 to spend on plants. Thing is I am not quite sure what I can legitimately ask gardener to do (No, nothing like that...).
I have an old garden shed which is falling to bits and I would like to dismantle but I would then love to concrete or pave over the bit of garden it stands on (about 12'x8' approx) then buy a new shed and a small greenhouse to go on it. Current shed sits at a tilt and whole area is on a slope so it would have to be levelled out first. Would that be something I could ask a gardener to do or is it more a builders job? Dreading to find out how much it would cost if so.
Will also look at some of the sugestions here as I would then have to buy a new shed and greenhouse and £ is simply not there at present. Obviously this would go way above my £250 but I really want a 'real' greenhouse as the polythene one I had (good quality, from Dobies) blew away in the wind last year and was found squished to bits on a main road about 1/2 a mile away. Just really grateful it did not cause any accidents. This was with it weighted down with concrete stepping stones around the metal tubular base and also tied firmly to the garden fence rather than simply put in the soil with tent pegs. (rope held to fence OK but came away from the plastic. Likewise the cement stepping stones stayed put over the metal frame at the bottom but the hollow metal tubes snapped above the plastic joiners!)
If I laid slabs or concrete in this area how do I screw anything down into it to secure the shed or greenhouse please?0 -
I've spotted that Argos are selling a "real" (as opposed to flappy plastic) 6 by 4 greenhouse for £179, which seems like a bargain. unfortunately where we live, the local kids love to play football and their ball is always getting knocked into the garden, so it has to be able to withstand the occasional ball. Can anyone either suggest a greenhouse that is cheaper (money is very tight) while not being the plastic £30 kind from wilkos, or could they confirm that the glass in this kind of greenhouse would be able to withstand hard kicked footballs? it says its: "glazed with pre-cut 'clear as glass' UV stabilised safety panels."
many thanks!

Its not glass in it, its twin wall polysomething roof and single wall plastic walls. Can't remember all the exact proper names
So no glass breakages. You do realise you are looking at a picture of I'm guessing the 6x8 foot greenhouse though?Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
yup i realise that.. i had a £30 plastic one from Wilkinsons last year which i left up over the winter (very sheltered spot, and i put it in a "hole" in the ground so that the wind had less opportunity to slip under the bottom of the sheeting) and it was fine until a couple weeks ago, when high winds snapped the (rotten) fence off and slammed it into the greenhouse, totally wrecking it. i was just going to replace it with another £30 one but saw that one in argos and thought.. hmm. that's affordable. anyway. the £30 one is the same size as the 6 by 4 from argos, so i'm well versant with the space it affords.. or rather, doesn't afford.. LOL
thanks though, for confirming no glass breakages.

Try here;

I have the gardman version and its been fine certainly as good as and if not better than glass. They are all a nightmare to assemble though in my view, but i prefer the polycarb version for safety and durability.
Before shelling out on a new one have you thought about reglazingg the existing one in polycarb ?0 -
thanks didnt think of argos.
How are they when its windy do the panels stay in place??
Cant really reglaze it as its on its last legs plus i have taken it all to pieces ready for tip0 -
Someone else on here had a problem with one in the high winds recently, i never have.
You just need to be sure the panels are properly sealed and clipped in place.
If its located in an open area it may be worth using extra panel clips, these can be obtained from ebay, b&q and the like cheaply.0 -
thanks again
I think it will be ok at bottom of garden got 6ft fence all round and my garden is only 3 panels wide so should be fine0 -
