When buying a greenhouse there is a simple rule, decide on the size you want then buy the next size up.

If you use the greenhouse to its full extent it is a year round structure and you should discount the temporary types.

My sister in law sells very good greenhouses on Ebay in 6x4 6x6 and 6x8, pm me if you are interested.

We bought a 6' x 4' plastic walk in one from Homebase a couple of years ago.

The plastic ripped in the high storms but you can now buy replacement ones which are reinforced and so should be a hell of a lot stronger than the clear one that first came with it. The cover was only £12.99 so although the initial outlay is about £49 it should last a while and you could get a spare cover just in case.

its worth keeping on your local ads, in shops, free papers
We have the friday ad in our area, a mag totally of ads.

Each week there is at least 1 6x4 regular greenhouse ( glass and metal ) going for free, collector dismantles

I am getting into gardening and would love a large greenhouse, but space is a premium and most of my garden is on a slope, I was wondering if in your opinions would this be any good to start seedlings off etc..http://www.activemailorder.org.uk/planthouses.html#sph

I hope this link works, I'm as good with the computer as with the garden....I'm learning all the time!;)

I've decided to buy a greenhouse and get it set it up before winter (hoping they might be cheaper this time of year too) but there's so many to choose from I'm not sure which to go for :o

I like the look of the Eden Acorn one as it seems quite robust and good value for money, plus its dimensions are slightly larger than the usual 6'x8' ones, but then I'm not sure whether one of the polycarbonate ones would be better, and safer.

I don't necessarily want to buy the cheapest, but the best value for money, and one which will last for several years!

Also, I'd like some advice on preparing the base please. Some of them offer an optional steel base - can this be placed directly onto the ground (compacted soil) or do I still need to make my own hard standing (using paving slabs) for the base to sit on?

    Any advice gratefully received :)

I have one of the polycarb ones your second link went to.
    Its a Gardman 8 x6 actually more like 8foot 4" x 6 foot 4"
and you get a steel base. I opted for polycarb due to having small boys. I was suprised that the quality was quite good given the relatively low cost. Make sure you get an auto opener for the vent though.

As regards the base i just put it on level ground,
The greenhouse clamps to the steel base which is pegged to the ground. Your supposed to cement the pegs in place but ours is in such a sheltered spot its not an issue.

Just make sure its all square when you assemble it or
things may twist when you put it on the base.

Also worth knowing is that polycarb is easy to cut with scissors. Have fun with your purchase ! ;)

Thanks! I've gone with your suggestion and just ordered the Gardman 6x8 :D

I've found the auto-openers and louvre vents cheaper on Ebay than the site I ordered from, so will order these from there ;)

I hadn't realised the base had anchoring pegs when I first posted, but this sounds even easier that I originally thought. I'll probably place a slab in each corner to level it up then drive the base pegs into the ground, as the ground is pretty firm where I want to put it.
