As a police officer if I had to respond to an incident like this my first question to the O/P would be 'why do you keep parking in the same place if you know it annoys the home owner so much?' I know its the public highway and that you have a right to park there but equally common sense suggests that as you are aware that the family is being wound up by you parking there, then you could alleviate the problem by varying the places you park. Have you thought that there might be a good reason why the family gets wound up by people parking outside their house whatever the legal situation? Hopefully words of advice to both parties would suffice because the only way that I would arrest/report/ticket the homeowner for section 5 would be if he or she had a long history of anti social behaviour or public order offences.

    Quite inadequate for several reasons.

For one, what happens when the OP moves on? Do you do the same again when somebody else parks there? Then again, and again... After all, it is a college and it appears parking is at a premium.

Secondly, you should instead inform the antagonists that their behaviour is not welcomed by the OP, who is a single lady, and that she feels intimidated by their behaviour and it could even be of a criminal nature and she is doing nothing wrong whatsoever.

That should shut them up. If not, arrest them.

So you leave the car there all day? Have to say that I live in a street plagued by idiots like that too. I can't stand it and although I know it means nothing I have been known to leave sarky notes on the car windscreens telling them to clear off.

You have no idea how annoying it is to see people arriving in your road and swanning off elsewhere all day like your road is their personal car park.

Why can't you park where you are at college? Does it have no car park?

    Ha, ha, what a nerve!

Get this, roads are not just for driving, they are also, essentially, a car park too, so long as there are no restrictions.

You should start up a campaign group to ban roads and march on Downing St!

    "Your road" indeed.:rotfl:

Thanks for your replies and support guys. Believe me if there was another feasible alternative i would but parking is limited. Just to explain further the houses are detached and have wide drive ways. Also i am parking beside a bush which is further screened by the residents hedge and i am parking outside his neighbours house but the point is he classes it as his road.

Re Ado's response this is why i did not want to get the police involved i am the victim legally and we are both being spoken to should i continue to park legally on this road i would be in trouble i think.

Thank you everyone i shall continue to park there, i will diarise all issues as you recommend.

No, you would not. Ado is just saying that he would initially try to mediate a solution to suit both parties. If the situation is exactly as you say then there is no way you would be in trouble. If the house owner continued to behave in the way you describe after being spoken to by the police then he would definitely be in trouble.

Of course, if the cantankerous fool decides to carry on intimidating you, then you can also have your friend Mr.S.Gun to travel with you:

I don't understand what there is to mediate though, it's a public road, there are no parking restrictions, the OP's car is legal and the OP is not causing an obstruction so the OP is entitled to park there, nothing the grumpy old farts can do, end of, what the police officer should be doing is remind this couple that they do not own the road and that they will be taking any further allegations of threats/abuse very seriously.

.... and the owner believes they are better than you or I and by virtue of buying a detached house with a drive actually think they have some selective right to WHO parks there.

I'd be willing to put money the same people would not want residents only.... as they want that space for their well to do friends, they want the space to be for anyone they decide can park there but noone else.

I still see my old neighbours, they are like adoptive grandparents to my son.
On my old street the next door but one neighbours make a fuss over anyone parking on the street. There are NO parking restrictions.... they just think they can dictate WHO parks... so when I visit I park on my neighbours drive an they park on the street to avoid conflict!

Its even weirder, they have 3 sons.... the one who had a car when he lived at home is in their eyes 'allowed' and the other two are not...

I very much agree with this.

Yes, there are many situations in life where mediation might be the best option but this case is clear cut imo.

To seek some sort of 'give' from a party who has done nothing wrong, simply to appease the party who is most definitely wrong, only serves to feed the idea that some people are above the law.

It's this kind of thing that breeds resentment in society and lack of trust in the Police to make accurate assessments and good decisions.

One thing I should say in case Ado thinks my comments are aimed at him and his ability as a police officer is that I believe that this sort of response from the police is dictated from above and is becoming the default action, not because the rank and file officers want that but because their so called superiors think it will help with targets or whatever measurement scheme the authorities dream up next.
