As a police officer if I had to respond to an incident like this my first question to the O/P would be 'why do you keep parking in the same place if you know it annoys the home owner so much?' I know its the public highway and that you have a right to park there but equally common sense suggests that as you are aware that the family is being wound up by you parking there, then you could alleviate the problem by varying the places you park. Have you thought that there might be a good reason why the family gets wound up by people parking outside their house whatever the legal situation? Hopefully words of advice to both parties would suffice because the only way that I would arrest/report/ticket the homeowner for section 5 would be if he or she had a long history of anti social behaviour or public order offences.

So the OP parks her car legally (we assume) and because it winds up a home owner, you would speak to both parties but your words of advice would be for the OP to move, no wonder she doesnt want the police involved.

If that would be the police response then it's no surprise that respect for thepolice from the public is at an all time low and continues to decline.

Someone is harassed by a person for doing something perfectly legal and the police would side with the harasser ?

No I don't think Ado is suggesting that the police would side with the harrasser. what he/she is saying that the police would look for an easy solution to the problem as well as warning the harrassers about their behaviour. After all, if there is another place OP can conveniently park, why shouldn't she if it makes this situation go away?

On the flip side why should she, I do get what you are saying though, but she has already stated that there are very few places to park so given that she has asked for advice, I would say it is unlikely that there are other places to park

I think I would monitor the parking spot, sometimes park there and take notes/photos of any abuse.

Then park slightly away but see what happens when someone esle parks there and make notes and take photos, get the other persons details if you can.

Do this for quite some time and if enough notes and other peoples names and address make a complaint to the police.

But as we know they will do nothing so expect nothing but do it anyway as one day that person making the complaint to you may end up hurt by not so polite a person as you and then your report and evidence may be of use and the fact that the police ignored the situation that led to the situation getting out of hand and the person being hurt.

Whos fault would that be? The police for not doing their job in the first place.

So GlynD, if everyone objected to everyone but them parking "on their street" where would people be allowed to park ?

As the response from Ado reads, the police only want to take the easy option and ignore the legalities of the situation.

I may be misinterpreting Ado's post but sadly it would not surprise me if I am interpreting it correctly

I find it as bizarre as you. I would involve the police because I don't like harrassment. If the police made that suggestion though to try and keep the peace then I would look for somewhere else convenient to park.

God! I've been following this for a while now and TBH it's droning on a bit.

I had a similar 'problem' once when a matey came racing out of his house because I had parked perfectly legally in front of it. I simply waited till he had stopped ranting and then calmly asked him to calm down and tell me what the problem was whereby I would definitely move if it was a genuine problem. Anyway, once he had calmed down he said he was expecting a visitor later that afternoon so I said "well if you had given me a chance to speak in the first instance, I could of told you that I was only going to post a letter so i'll be gone in about less than 10 minutes"!

Why do people think they have a divine right to have exclusive use of that piece of road which runs infront of their property? And why do they act aggressively towards anyone who dares to park there??

If this guy has a problem then he should speak to his local council, not be abusive to other members of the public.

@Ado, typical response from the police by the way. Why need history? If the home owner is being abusive and aggressive enough, surely it is him/her that you should be speaking to and not the poor legally (we assume) parked motorist?

Ado - I could understand the response if the OP was parking or driving in an antisocial manner and with the sole purpose of aggravating the home owner. But that's clearly not the case. The OP is doing nothing wrong, and wants the homeowner to stop getting himself annoyed.
  • As somebody that drives past a school every single morning at 'drop off time' to ge tto my place of work, I'm not surprised he's already annoyed.

The amount of people who park up illigally and think it's ok to because they are dropping off their offspring increase each year. Even if a policeman is nearby, they still do it!

Then you have the people who just pull out without even looking because they ARE DROPPING OFF THEIR CHILDREN FOR EDUCATION!

    :rotfl:

Just park somewhere else. I understand that you might not be doing anything illigal, but its obviously distressing people who live by the school. You have a car with wheels that you could park elsewhere. They have a house, it ain't gonna be moving anytime soon!
