It is easy to think thin people never get any stick, but my sister is naturally skinny but she's had people say the whole "real women have curves" thing as that's just as hurtful to her. She may be skinny but she's as much as a woman as i am.
Aw thanx for that, I'm scrawny and tall and I get the "real women...." comment all the time. My response?
"Oh no, I'm a real woman too. When I went to the loo earlier, I checked and my vagina was still there" Shuts 'em up every time ; )0 -
Yup, except that 'its' is not an adjective, it is a possessive pronoun
Going to have to disagree with you there - IMO it's a possessive adjective. Possessive pronouns are his/hers/yours/ours etc
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Possessive_adjectives#Forms
"Personal pronouns are also often associated with possessive forms. English has two sets of such forms: the possessive determiners (also called possessive adjectives) my, your, his, her, its, our and their, and the possessive pronouns mine, yours, his, hers, its (rare), ours, theirs (for more details see English possessive). In informal usage both types of words may be called "possessive pronouns", even though the former kind do not function in place of nouns, but qualify a noun, and thus do not themselves function grammatically as pronouns."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_pronoun“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”

That's an excellent response. Seriously made me laugh out loud. I've always wondered about that "real women" thing, especially because almost every single woman I know has been a similar shape/size since being children. The ones that were skinny-still skinny, the ones that were a bit fat-still fat, etc etc. I really don't know anyone, ANYONE who starves themselves, or exercises to an extent that their body is vastly different. So what, were we all designated as being "real" women or not even before puberty?0 -

I know tons of people who were skinny kids and put weight on later in life, I also know loads who were very overweight or obese and managed to lose stones and stones and get healthy. Both men and women.
Do you really not know anybody who has changed their body shape? I was always a healthy weight as a child but have clothes in my wardrobe from a size 8 to a 16 now and my weight has gone up and down a fair bit in adulthood. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in that!0 -

Know a few people who were on the chubby side who've now slimmed down. My mum has always yo-yoyed with her weight too. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Jojo, that sounds awful, I would hate to have that happen to me
Well, she was a fairly vacuous !!!!!.
But things like that can lead to the so called innocent jokes like the OP's shampoo gag as being just another in a long string of 'ha ha, I was only joking, I don't know why she's getting all shirty about it' comments invariably uttered out of sheer meanness.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
I was drastically underweight when I was in my early 20's. I was called a Cambodian (remember comic relief ?) and other vile names. I just didn't feel the need to eat unless I was hungry. I had a horrible time and because I am nearly 6' I used to stoop as it made me less obvious (hiding my lack of boobs). I now have a permanant stoop which causes intense back ache. I am overweight too. I don't feel anymore a 'real' woman just because I have a bit of fat on my arze and boobs. I still feel as ugly as hell as the bullies got me at a vulnerable time.
I have chronic epilepsy(which nearly killed me on a number of times). I think I have heard most of the epi jokes. Most are offensive in my opinion. I don't enjoy not having control over my bowels when I have a siezure so saying 'chuck your washing in when they have a fit in the swimming pool' is not funny at all.
I also have a problem when people say 'I nearly threw a fit'. No, you didn't.
(but maybe I am being a boring old b'stard)0 -

How much of a problem is that though? It's just a turn of phrase like, "I could have died laughing", or "Blimey" or "Struck dumb".
You can't get yourself upset by every little turn of phrase or you'll end up having kittens [joke] at the slightest comment."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

But that's what I mean. Anyone I know who was slightly chubby at puberty is still chubby. Don't get me wrong, some have lost massive amounts of weight, but they have all put it all back on, including me I should add. I really mean that I don't know anyone (people on strong medication excepting) who has managed to change their shape for any real period of time. People have gone up and down a few pounds, or stones, but everyone has balanced back into what their body is most predisposed to. I don't know ANYONE who, if naturally predisposed to putting weight on, has managed to maintain a lifestyle that allows them to be a size 8 when their natural stable weight is a 12-14 say. Even if they've managed to be a size 8 for a while.0
