Considering I've only had to write two emails to get this sort of result is speaking volumes, surely making me an offer of this nature is admitting liability(sp)

I guess it would do no harm to be 'cheeky' and ask for more Steph, they can only say no.

As I have said before, it really is of little consequence who previously owned the car if it's doing a decent job for you, the £1000 (or higher if you can pull it off) is just a nice bonus IMHO.

It's certainly easier to manipulate, it would seem.

Rental cars only have upto 10,000 on them. How old was it when you bought it? as they only keep them for6-9 months..

I'm afraid you're wrong. Whilst the majority of hire cars are returned before they reach a certain milestone (12 months old/10,000 miles) but sometimes they keep them longer. Previously I've had a 2.5 year old Seat from Hertz with close to 60K on the clock.

OP. If you're the second owner then you're a brave person keeping a hire car that had 41K on the clock when you bought it. they will be very hard miles.

OP. Do your homework in future. Ask for the V5 and check previous owners and service history.

BTW. What's the fastest car in the world? A Hire Car;)

Funnily enough my mum said that before lol.

I don't think I'm keen on going to buy a car anymore :( It's put me right off.

Aaah, and just as Steph was about to get a good night's sleep, another expert comes along to tell her that her car is about to explode in the next 7 days.

p.s. the 'joke' has already been done

p.p.s. Steph, I've got a feeling Honest John is more qualified/experienced than Smi1er, have a good sleep babe ;)

I think the best advice after this is to look at what you are buying next time.

I bought my current car from Arnold Clark as I have done many times. It was described as an ex demo owned by them. It was 4 months old with 1300 miles and I got £6k off new price.

When I picked the car up, the V5 confirmed what they said so I paid them the £7,000 balance and drove away.

If I bought a car with the previous owner shown as ERAC UK and I didn't want an ex rental/lease/hire car with 700 previous 'owners' then I would be asking questions then and not a year later.

Lol! I hope it doesn't I might have it back within the next 7 days!

I'm not keen on my car going into garages I know what mechanics are like (no offence to any mechanics though)

I'll be up for another 3 hours yet :)

Just to demonstrate how your preventative steps might not be as watertight as you thought, courtesy cars are also sold as ex-demo's, and of course registered to the dealer, in this case AC.

So your car may have had hundreds of drivers too...(with those low miles they would have all been local runs to work/school/shops etc. whilst people's own cars were in for service/repair - just think how many speed bumps your car may have hit, and how many times the clutch was used etc.).

    Sorry, couldn't resist.

Car might not explode in 7 days. Might take 8:p

In future do you're homework. A few years back I was out Astra shopping with someone. Were happy with car and price but didn't want an ex hire car. Dealer said it wasn't and I asked to see V5.

They couldn't locate it they said and I then informed them we were ready to leave a deposit but if I couldn't see the V5 we were going to walk. 2 mins later the V5 was found:eek:

First owner was something like British somethingorother Ltd. Salesman said sounds like a ex british gas company car. I picked up phone and called Dir Enq, gave them name and address and they gave me the number. I called the number and was greeted with 'Hello, Europcar.....'.

Salesman lost sale and by the look of him he knew all along it was ex hire.
