I used to work in tesco's and there would sometimes be a message come up when you scanned something saying the item is not for sale, and we weren't allowed to sell the item and they would all have to be removed from the shelf if they hadn't already. We were never given a reason as to why the product wouldn't be for sale, but often it would be to do with a batch being recalled. They wouldn't be able to sell the item if it comes up as 'do not sell', even if they knew the price, they're not allowed to let you go home with it. And the cashier would be none the wiser as to why they're not allowed to sell it. Can't imagine what would be wrong with sugar puffs though.

It may well have been as Princessa says. If they hadn't got the recall through to the actual grocery department but the product had been officially recalled then the till would tell them not to sell it. Saves any babies accidentally being given glass in their babyfood in the meantime etc...

  • I have had this exact same problem today! I wanted to but 2 jars of spanish honey and was told that they couldn't sell it as the item was not on file!! I have never heard anything so ridiculous in all my life! The checkout girl called her supervisor to check that she couldn't sell them, and this was confirmed. I said well just give them to me then? Obviously they wouldn't do that. I told them that I just wanted to buy them, that I couldn't get this honey anywhere else and that I had now bought the yogurt to go with it! So I asked to speak to the manager - they pointed me to CS. I explained the same to her, asked for the manager who eventually came about 10 minutes later. She went off in search of the honey, brought it back to the till, then tried to tell me it didn't have an EAN code so they couldnt sell it etc etc. I said I don't care what code it doesnt have - I just want to buy it! I also said so for the sake of 2 jars of honey you are prepared to lose a customer who spends £80 per week here? She said well that's your choice but I can't sell it to you! I left and told them I would be contacting their head office. They didn't care. I am just sick to the back teeth of poor customer service everywhere and in everything I do! In my job I deliver excellent customer service so why shouldn't I expect it? I hate this country. I am sick of these huge companies like tesco, virgin media, Sky etc etc who monopolise their line of business and all provide the worst customer service possible.

a packet of sugar puffs to be precise.

they wouldnt scan and kept coming up as 'item unknown', the supervisor came, took them away and told us they werent for sale.

!!!!!! were they doing on the shelf then?

didnt think to complain as i was doing goldfish impressions. would you complain?

Might have been a recall - item not fit for consumption. Blocked bar code numbers are downloaded from head office, so that the item can be intercepted. Saves a lot of looking through stock if only a few items are affected out of several batches.

How long did you spend doing all that, not to mention then the time wrigint/phoning/emailing their head office after. At the end of the day you've chosen to spend that much time doing that.

I personally would have located an alternative jar of honey.

This really has nothing to do with the honey - just the constant poor customer service that is doled out daily in this country. The only places that you get good customer service is in small shops where they are glad of your business. I get very despondent because of these big companies taking over, consistently delivering poor customer service, consistently telling me how good they are, and when I try to make them stand up and take notice nobody gives a flying *@?! I will never ever shop at Tesco's again now, not that anybody there cares. But it will make me feel better. I would rather pay more and get better service than give my money to Tesco.

I have, since my post, been on to CS 0800 number and they told me exactly the same. What really sticks in my craw though is each time I have told them I won't shop there again - nobody has tried to persuade me otherwise - nobody. If that was me in my job, I would be doing all that I could to keep that customer. But nobody at Tesco is bothered! They don't deserve to be one of the biggest companies in Britain, the way they treat their customers.

Well reading any of your posts you obviously don't care how you're treated - you just roll over and take it.
