We have done both private and public boat. The Allilaguna (public boat) is fine from Marco Polo airport. A private water taxi is great but it is pricey it depends on your budget. Some must do's:

Do book in advance for the Secret Itineraries tour of the Doge's Palace, you get to see the rooms which are not open to the public, go up the bell tower in San Marco, and do the Viator Ghost Tour. Apart from that just wander, get lost and enjoy!!

You are right...allilaguna. I had forgotten that word! Shows I only did it the once!:D

Definitely will do the water taxi then!

Just hope any flooding wont be too bad, Ive been reading about people eating breakfasts in their hotels in wellies the hotels give out, suppose it all adds to the experience though!

    Quick tip...

Is your hotel 'American breakfast?' if not the breakfasts can be somewhat underwhelming. But go to the supermarket, get some treats. Lots of the bakers etc are ovpriced and on main tourist routes not very good. Buy some fruit at market and you won't mind if it's Italian breakfast.:)

I have always wanted to go during "Acqua Alta" or High Water. They put up elevated walkways in the main areas so you don't get too wet, but the hotels will provide all you need. It will add to your experience. Do try to get to Murano and Burano as well and maybe the Lido. There is so much to see and do in Venice a month would be too little time.

If you want restaurant/general tips have a look on Slowtravel, some of the members live in Venice (although they are American and do have slightly different tastes to us I find!!)

Shall we start a Veniceophile thread?:rotfl:

I feel bad for derailing this one. The smaller islands are a MUST IMO. Better in someways than the intensity of the main island.

I know breakfast is included I think it's like continental type from what I read on trip advisor but tbh I read so many hotel reviews I can't remember for sure ill have to check lots seemed to say bread rolls with meats/cheese/jam etc!
  • I havent read all the responses, but if I didnt live here I'd go on honeymoon to east Africa. Split your time between either Sarengetti / Ngororogo and Zanzibar or Masai Mara and Lamu. If its your thing, you can pass down to Gorillas in Uganda.

Exotic, different and some of the worlds greatest experiences in one place.

I am not sure if it has already been mentioned but having a quick look throught all the replies/comments i didnt see anything. Have you thought about Cape Verde? Althought a quiet and very relaxing destination (with not alot to do when we went - which really didnt bother us) it was beautiful and we loved it! We stayed at the All Inclusive 5* Riu Karamboa - It was Perfect. If your both after a quiet and relaxing place to go with amazing beaches then this is the place to be.

This Picture below is just one of the beaches that you can go and visit - when we went there was not one single hotel built on it so it was so peaceful
