I assumed that she had been there, but I was reeling from all the not special, get there on Easyjet, stuff so I might have got it wrong.

For me, Venice is one of the only places I've been that I would go back to again, for longer. In fact I'd live there if I could. It's amazing.

Me too, I am a Piscean and I feel so at home there!!!

    Thank you Person_One.

FWIW GlamGirlie, saying "oh it's not special enough, we want somewhere really wonderful" IS dissing my suggestion because it is implicit in what you said that my suggestion (my own honeymoon destination) is NOT those things.

But no worries, I don't want to talk to you anyway, I want to talk to someone polite, with manners, who has some grace.

    ;)

Surely different things are special to different people. It would be a very boring world if we all wanted/liked the same things.

I went on a coach tour around USA for my honeymoon. Well aware it wouldn't be everybodys choice and tbh if someone said it wasn't special enough it really wouldn't upset/bother me as to me it was special and wonderful
Give me the boy until he's seven and i'll give you the man.

    Me three.

I used to spent lots of time there, as just a train journey from where we lived. I was really apprehensive about it, but immeadiately felt at home. Dh laughs because I find the Venetian accent so easy to understand, it's just like the place...soft and dreamy and a little lost and sleepy and porrly defined. I love proper Venetian food, and eel the despair of what is happening to venice and Venicians with taxes and the travesty of the decimation of some of the traditional crafts. It's a bittersweet place of dreams and harsh realities both.

I am not a sea water person, but if I had to live in a city again Venice would be a serious, serious contender.

Special is one thing Venice really and truely is. Hot, it isn't in January...and frankly I like it less in good weather. Mists are the best clothes of venice.

I agree the neighbourhood shops are going and tourist tat is taking over. I hope the tourist bed tax helps.

With regard to temperature, we have been sitting at the pizza restaurant by the Academia bridge in March and it has been 20 degrees. I feel like I am going home when we arrive in Venice, maybe I lived there in a previous life!!

I've been sun burned in February or march too....and never burn, so put it to reflexions off the water.

Yes, Venice feels like home to me. We are lucky enough to have a member pod family with an appartment in a very beautiful and well located palazzo and lots of friends in Venice, so it's a happy place for us.

I have a friend who was one of the last true artisan paper makers, I met him in his shop and we correspond a lot and while he was still there I bought a book each time we went to Venice. But he gave me so much more and was keen to teach me to marble when he realised my passion for it. The thing is, so much of that is Chinese made in even some of the shops with good name. Anyway....he couldn't afford to stay and left a few years ago. Terribly sad.

I am soo jealous, we stay in hotels or rented apartments but I would love to integrate into the real Venice. My dream is to attend a masked ball in a palazzo on the GC. I also love the handmade paper.

I think I have read every book set in Venice, currently have read all the Donna Leon Brunetti books, and done the Brunetti walks when we visit, now I have discovered Edward Sklepowich and his evocative books.

We've stayed in hotels too, and may well do again. It depends who is in the apartment.

ATM I cannot fly because of my medical condition, otherwise we might have gone this week. :(. Dh is popping over to Milan and Venice in march though.
  • Off topic, but skintchic, LIR and poet, if you really love Venice, have you read the detective series written by Donna Leon set in Venice - they are wonderful (read them in order)and get behind the scenes of the city with some great characters.

Claire that's a great deal. We can;t afford to go away right now but nice to know it doesn't have to cost a fortune. Our HM hotel was very pricey but absolutely gorgeous and we arrived by boat from the airport which was amazing.
