Son quit job

OP, he sounds almost like my son except that my son does work. But only a 12 hour weekly contract. He has no outgoings except his phone and a magazine subscription - and his board obviously. He's good with his money I'll give him that but I've told him repeatedly to look for a full time job but at the moment he's not motivated to find one. He pulls his weight round the house by doing the cooking and the dishes. And, in his words, he's the cats' primary care giver!
I'm hoping that eventually he'll get sick of just having enough money for the basics but nothing extra for holidays, nights out etc. and will look for a full time job. Until then, I'm keeping my mouth shut.
I echo what others have said - give him the basics. Food, water and shelter. I'd also make sure that he took on chores like all the cooking and cleaning. Make it so !!!!!!! miserable at home that he'll take the first job he sees!0 -
Thank you to all who have given good ideas. You have stopped me being a complete wreak today. MSE at its best.0

As much as cutting off the electricity during the day sounds appealing, how does this frustrated parent stop her fridge and freezer defrosting without a continuing electricity supply?
Its OK we have one of those electric units with separate fuses for different circuits. Upstairs sockets have a fuse, downsatirs sockets another, the showers another etc. The Fridge freezer is in the garage with it's own circuit so I can leave the fuse in for that.0 -

Oh I intend to. However I don't think it's as simple as him taking the first job he sees. It more about whether any employer would ever give him a chance when he just quit a perfectly good job already.
I know I wouldn't.0 -
OK - let's be positive about this. I was going to suggest CSV but if that is his latest interest.........
Refer him here http://www.wwoof.org.uk/ and give him one month to sort out a placement
been trying to remember what it was called, a friend of mine did this and went to japan for a couple of months and had a really good time, still cost him over £2k though! so hardly free! When using the housing forum please use the sticky threads for valuable information.0 -

We take on quite a few school-leavers where I work and you won't believe how many leave because some parts of the jobs are routine etc. We always tell them that once they have learnt the basics and proved themselves they can start to work on more interesting projects and have more input and maybe even start their own project. But no, they leave claiming that they will find some utopian workplace...0 -

A lot of wwoofers overseas work part of the time and then take a holiday as well which they have to fund. They have to pay their own transport costs to the placement as well. UK and EU placements would be cheaper to get to.
Providers have to explain the basis on which they are offering exchange and that might be all meals, self catering or even cash payments. If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -
My worry is that at the moment his ambitions are not realistic.
The Gaming industry is ultra competitive to get into and there are not lots of jobs to be had.
Having on your CV that you gave up on a major bank internship is going to be hard to explain away.
Saying you were bored won't cut it....
If he really wants to pursue this i would suggest he really should look into developing a portfolio of any work he has done with regards to games, design, etc.
There are lots of places to advertise yourself on the web now for very little money outlay.
He will probably need to build up such a thing to even get through the door, especially if he lacks any formal qualifications.
My worry is that he hasn't grasped that playing a game is a long way from designing and developing a game.
There are lots of mundane aspects of writing code even for people that work in places like NASA.
Having worked in "IT" for a very large Bank as well as two big ISP's and a couple of hosting companies, 99% of the time it is not the height of excitement.
The only time it is "exciting" usually means something is going horribly wrong and means i won't be going home until it is "boring" again.0 -
I have asked him this. He says he wants to be self sufficient by travelling and living off the land (in the UK, hasn't got a current passport). Hes never shown any desire in that direction before.
He has about £1000 saved.
Does he picture himself as some romantic figure, wandering the countryside, sleeping under self-constructed branch hides and hunting/foraging to feed himself? If so, does he know anything at all about foraging or hunting? There's also only one person in the UK who's managed to survive a year on 100% foraged food - the guy's name is Fergus the Forager (he's a professional forager of many years' experience who supplies high end restaurants) and even he struggled...and we're talking some days there was only very ripe Badger roadkill...“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”

Has he actually handed in his notice and is currently working his notice period or has he just hold you he is going to? Is there any chance you can persuade him to stay?! Or did he just walk out?0
