Son quit job

Just a rant

Yesterday my 19 year old son has quit a job as an IT apprentice with one of the 4 big banks (leading programming qualifications C++ etc) after only 5 months because it was boring.

Prior to getting that job he'd quit a 2 year college course (studying aerospace engineering) after the 1st year for the same reason.

Can't see any employer giving him job with that track record and who could blame them

He says he doesn't want a job anyway.

At least he wont be a drain on the benefits system as he wont be eligible to claim any. Too right.

I really don't know where he gets the idea he doesn't need to work from. We both work as does his older brother.:mad:

Feel like chucking him out on the streets.

Thing is, if he doesn't work and can't get benefits then it will be you on whom he is relying.

Most jobs are routine and, therefore, boring. But kids don't learn to tolerate being bored anymore.

Tough decision for you!

No you don't or you would have done it by now. Anyway that might drive him to getting money by 'other' means. I agree that kids today want instant gratification and don't learn to cope with boredom.

He must be mad in this climate. Sounds like he has thrown away two excellent chances. Get him to watch Growing Up Poor, the whole series.

I wouldn't chuck him out but I would refuse to give him any money.

I sympathise. It is difficult to find a first job that is both stimulating and sufficiently paid. But he needs to think carefully about his next move.

What does he actually want to do with his life?

I'm harsh and also don't have any kids, so maybe I'm a bad person for saying this.

Feed him, replace his clothes with mega-cheap ones when they wear out, so his basic needs are catered for. Then give him nothing else. No money to go out with friends, no "luxuries", no alcohol, nothing.

Then see what he says about a job. It's what my mum would have done.

I have asked him this. He says he wants to be self sufficient by travelling and living off the land (in the UK, hasn't got a current passport). Hes never shown any desire in that direction before.
He has about £1000 saved.

Well I think I'm a bit of a soft touch where my kids are concerned but I agree with this. I would make sure he understands that no work = no spending money.

At the same time I would try to help him to find the direction he would like to take. There may be something he would enjoy and it may be something quite different from what he has done in the past. I have seen this numerous times when I was a careers advisor and just when you have given up hope with kids like this, they suddenly find a niche. I think he needs the motivation to look for work and as with most people, money could be it. Good luck.

My neighbour's son was like that. He did claim JSA and she let him keep all of it which he was quite happy with.

She suddenly got fed up of seeing him lying in bed till mid afternoon and stinking the house out with cannabis while leaving the house looking like a bombsite.

She laid down new rules - no more cannabis in the house and he was to give £25 a week from his JSA for his keep.

He had a job within a month.
