there is an old thread along these lines. try having a look for it. a vast majority said as close to living costs as possible and if you feel too mean then put some aside towards a deposit / decorating fund for when they want to move out, however as a dfw, I would have thought going towards your payments would be the most useful.

  • sorry, i try not to repeat old threads and did do a search (but obviously not a good enough one)
I like the idea of her buying food for a week, though i fear we may live on spag bol all week.

when I was first earning and living at home many years ago, the norm for me and my friends was, 1/3 to mum,1/3 to save and 1/3 to spend seemed ok at the time and I later did the same with my daughters,

I don't think kids realise the full cost of everything. If you write down and add up rent/mortgage, council tax, gas, electric, food bill, etc then show her. I think she will then appreciate how much everything costs. She may be happier to pay the amount you're asking, which I think is fair.

I agree to paying rent although how much depends upon the family as a whole. Wont come as a shock when she does leave home.

I expect it is difficult as kids do want to go out and have fun while mum at home trying to make ends meet week to week.

If I had my time again I would go for option of 1/4 for each
    1/4 for board/ rent
    1/4 for saving
    1/4 for personal stuff
    1/4 for essentials.
  • quarters sound good to me, though it means i'm taking too much from her at the mo.
I may have a chat with her and agree to reduce a little IF she agrees to save the same amount each week that i charge for rent.

  • well i pay £30 a week so thats £120 a month (depending on weeks in the month) but a 1/4 of what i earn would be £189 a month
