I think its harder to tell on the Kia's/Hyundai - the old ones used to have a 4 wheel drive lock button - not sure if new ones have any controls?

The AWD Kia and Hyundai (sportage and Ix35) have a lock button but it is only good up to 25mph, after that it disengages automatically.

Yes I do realise most are 2 wheel drive, I don't need AWD, however I do need decent ground clearance.

Ok that's fine, just annoys me that so many SUV's now they keep quiet about the drive (or lack of) and are happy to let many assume it will have ability it won't.

We have/Had various SUV's, the CR-V is by far the most fun to drive, it revs and revs without any complaint and with decent tyres can be chucked around obscenely. They also keep some useful value as they get old - the Honda reliability comfort factor starts to kick in with buyers of older (potentially more risky) cars.

I can see myself getting another CR-V when the time comes and that doesn't happen often with me.

You obviously haven't driven any of my suggestions!

I don't bother driving cars these days before I buy or lease. If I did that I'd have to listen to a salesman for goodness sake.

This is why I find the MIL running here and there test driving cars a total pain, and I get fed up with salesmen, who ask "how much do you have to spend" (when we have asked for a make and model to test drive) or "we don't quote an APR figure".

    Last few cars:-

    Chrysler 300D (lease)
    Grand Cherokee (lease)
Fiat Panda (salvage for eldest daughter to learn to drive 6 years ago and still going strong)
Fiat Panda (salvage for OH 5 years ago)
    Cherokee (salvage)

My criteria are fairly basic nowadays good ground clearance and for the big one the ability to tow +2 tonnes.

I tell you though I would seriously consider the Dacia Duster (2 for the price of one).

Take your point on not needing finance but 0% APR v's having the money in a bank account earning interest is a winner in an MSE sense.

The thing is if the dealer is offering 0% then you should be able to get a great deal with a broker which would more than offset any 0% finance deal.

Don't disagree, but if you are a bad haggler and don't want to use a broker it doesn't always hurt to leverage 0% APR deals.

Although the price you pay is a 3 star NCAP safety score.

If I was buying one I would be working on the premise that by the time I had finished with it, it would be dead! So depreciation wouldn't be an issue.

Was going to suggest the duster Top of the range 4x4 comes in at 15k for the diesel and about 1.5k less for 2x4. The diesel is the same one used in some of the
qashqui models. Top of the range spec isnt all that bad and it has been given many awards throughout europe. Yes there are downs sides the 3 star euro encap and unknow deprecation levels. But am sure with a bit of searching you could find what that is like in the countries that its already on sale in.
