I am looking at buying an SUV, I did want a new Vauxhall Mokka, however I've been told there is a 6 month wait from date of order so that's off the list, also I am now thinking that buying newish second hand may be a better route. I had a budget of £18k plus my car in mind when I was thinking of a new car, however second hand ideally £12k cash plus whatever I can get for my car, maybe £4k. I'm looking for something no more than 2 years old and nothing that's done more than 20,000 miles, ideal would be 1 year old and less than 10,000 miles, the lower and newer the better but with in budget, here's where the problem lies, my number one choice, Nissan Qashqai I am struggling to find within budget. Anyways, I'm open to sugestions for alternatives, must have bluetooth and cruise control, below 2.0ltr diesel, would consider petrol but bear in mind my commute to work and back is 40 miles a day 6 days a week at my own expense so fuel economy is a consideration.

Yep I like the Sportage, however, they are a bit scarce locally to me, plenty of the old model but I would only consider the new model.

Would you not travel for the right car? If you're spending this much on one then I would recommend it. The Sportage looks really good and the reviews seem decent. Very well priced too.

    Why less than 2L diesel?

If i wanted a SUV and used for for a 40 mile commute daily I'd go for a Honda CRV! However the 2.2TDCI is widely acknowledged as a way better option than the 2.0VTEC petrol and gets much much better MPG.

Are you buying privately or via a dealer?

IX35 I quite like, I think it shares mechanics with the Sportage, I may be wrong tyhough.

Yeti is a bit of a Marmite car and I'm just not sure I like it.

Kuga, too expensive, I had a look at a 2.0 diesel, Zetec spec on a 60 plate £16K and 44,000 miles and thirsty, my boss had one but got rid after 6 months because the fuel economy was pants.

Vauxhall Antara, again expensive and the interior is very dated, also the price of the car is loaded due to the 0% finance and I don't need nor want finance.

2L Diesel because I'm more thinking smaller class SUV and most seem to have 2L diesel as the upper limit engine size.

I'm sorry, I don't share your enthusiasm for Honda, as much as I'm sure they are boringly reliable, Honda cars just don't do it for me.

So, it seems like it's going to be either IX35, Sportage or Qashqai, pros and cons please?

I would be looking for approved used so it would be main dealer, I know this is a more expensive route but I feel that there is less risk of buying a dud.

I get 55MPG out of my diesel Mondeo yet I go on Ford forums and see people getting 40MPG out of the same car. Hell my wife can't get 50MPG out of it. People tend to rev diesels too high before changing gear, changing it at the same point they would a petrol which is the wrong way to drive a diesel.

My friend who used to be a truck driver gets 45MPG out of his diesel Chrysler Grand Voyager but his friend who borrows it from time to time can barely manage over 30MPG.
