My guess is that you have driven the older Sportage, and not the late 2010 onwards model.

The earlier one was a bit more 'old school', ladder-style chassis etc., the new one is totally car-like, perhaps more so than the examples you list - more akin to something like a Qashqai than an Outlander.

No I bought only last week so drove all the current models. I wouldn't really say the Sportage is the most car like or even close but fair enough if thats your choice.

If I didn't own a CRV my personal preferences would be Toyota Rav4 or Suzuki Grand Vitara.

I personally would not consider a Sportage having driven one. The above 3 were the first of the original compact SUV pack and their pedigree in this class shows. The Sportage lags way behind these in terms of drive and balance between SUV to car like driving/handling.

If I really did want something like a Sportage then my choice would be a Mitsubishi Outlander.

None of the cars you list appear in Autocar top 5 SUV or crossover lists, guess what? They Sportage the best in it's class
(crossover), above the Qasqai and Kuga, as for the Mitsubishi Outlander, it's bigger and far too expensive, the ASX is closer to being in the same class and the ASX, according to reviews is not very good and also it gets expensive if you spec up to get stuff like cruise control and bluetooth, even steering wheel audio controls are missing on the base model along with it not having alloy wheels, these are standard features on other cars in the class.

Agreed the Outlander is in a different class and price bracket.

I think the ASX looks interesting and owner reviews are better than those of the motoring press, which to me would make it interesting if the price was right. I guess Mitsubishi aren't keen on price cutting though so they might try to shift them via lease deals. (However that pre-supposes they have stock lying around)

I actually viewed an ASX and spoke to the salesman, it is a very solid, practical car but, compared to the others, a little dull and the interior is very dated, ok you could say the same about the Qashqai, however, the level of standard equipment on the Qashqai more than makes up for this.

Oh so you read an article, made your mind up before posting thread and went ahead and posted it anyway.

Sportage is not the best in its class. If you think it is then you are dreaming. It is the budget option of its class. Mid range and luxury compact SUV's are miles ahead of the Sportage.

Have you actually looked at what Audi and BMW offer in the Sportage range before actually claiming it is a class leader? Have you actually driven mid range SUV's like a Rav4?

Even the ASX you mentioned beats the Sportage hands down. You might want to rely on magazine articles that tell you otherwise but the ASX follows Mitsubishi's long standing in the SUV segment as sitting at the top end of the mid range.

Not knocking tge Sportage but its hardly difficult to beat as its the entry level budget option in the compact SUV market. If you want the newest numberplate on your drive then its the best option but definitely not a leader in its class.

You are putting cars into the class that don't belong, ok my thread title may have been a little missleading, however everyone else seems to have got the fact that I meant Crossover/compact SUV so this class would exclude BMW X3, Rav 4, Honda CRV, Mitsubishi Outlander, as for BMW X1 and Audi Q3, these are tart cars and really rely on the badge to sell them, expensive to buy and even more expensive when you add some toys.

No, you are changing what class each one sits in.

They are not tart cars. That just shows your complete misunderstanding of the segment. CRV, RAV4 and the Grand Vitara do not rely on badges to sell them. These cars innovated this segment. The comoact SUV/crossover segment only exists because the CRV, RAV4 and Grand Vitara were so good at what they did.

LOLZ at saying the budget/entry level SUV is the class leader and that the class leaders are tart cars.

You are lying. You obviously haven't driven any of my suggestions!

Op, you do realise most the cars you are looking at are only two wheel drive? so apart from a bit of extra clearance height have no more ability than a regular car or an equally roomy MPV?

Now if your buying for the SUV style that's fine by me, just as long as your aware not to assume that any of them are any better in bad weather.

The vast majority of these cars (used) are bought by company drivers who to keep their company car tax down went for cleaner 2 wheel drive version.

There are 4 wheel drive versions of them, SOME 2L Kia's and Hyundai's MAY be 4 wheel drive, SOME Qashqai, but only SOME 2.0L (or newer 1.7's), I know because I spent a long time looking for one!... many dealers will nod they are 4 wheel drive to the unsuspecting but often don't understand the variants.

On a Qashqai its easy to spot, if it doesn't have the drive selector control down by the gearlever - its only 2 wheel drive.

I think its harder to tell on the Kia's/Hyundai - the old ones used to have a 4 wheel drive lock button - not sure if new ones have any controls?

All honda CR-V's are 4 wheel drive and despite the press rubbish are perfectly capable in bad conditions - good enough for every paramedic trust to rely on!
  • Yes I do realise most are 2 wheel drive, I don't need AWD, however I do need decent ground clearance.

Vauxhall Antara, again expensive and the interior is very dated, also the price of the car is loaded due to the 0% finance and I don't need nor want finance.

Take your point on not needing finance but 0% APR v's having the money in a bank account earning interest is a winner in an MSE sense.

If the car is overpriced then i would agree that needs taking into consideration.
