  • I've been with M&S Energy (run by SSE) for the past year as they were cheapest for us. I've had trouble with customer service departments from several companies over the past few years but SSE customer service has been excellent.
  • They have the most dire customer help I've yet come across!

They actually told me it would be easier for me to change to a different company rather than send me a form out again!

    SERIOUS?

Energy Saving Champion I've been Money Tipped!
Been with them for 1 year now deal ends 30 Sept and changing supplier on cost.
Experience with them has been excellent. My account was in credit after one reading during the year and the bill stated that I would have a get a refund into my account within 5 days, sure enough credit was received within 3 days.
If they could have matched my new suppliers prices I would have been happy to stay with them☺️

I've just switched from 'M&S Fix & Save' to 'M&S Fix & Save 2'. Prior to the switch they told me that the electricity price would be 11.51p/kWh (inc VAT). Having just received a 'Thank you for choosing M&S Energy Fix & Save 2' letter they quote a price of 10.2p/kWh (inc VAT). Sadly there's no similar reduction in the gas price, but I'm rather surprised that they've dropped the electricity price by 11%!

I received my £20 of vouchers from M&S energy last week. Comprising of 1 x £5 for clothing and 3 x £5 for food. I went to Watford m&S to spend them. The cashier said she hadn't seen them before. These vouchers had a series of numbers written on them with no bar code. Two other layers of management claimed they weren't useable either and that I needed vouchers with bar codes. WRONG...I phoned M&S Energy who weren't at all helpful and said I needed to take it up with the store. Oh yes so I should waste my time doing this.I then went to M&S London Colney to try and spend the vouchers. Slightly more success in that they had seen them. However they claim I couldn't use more than voucher for one transaction when the T&Cs categorically state this is possible. I was also told one of the vouchers had been used when it hadn't! I had to pay for the food in three chunks in order to use the valid vouchers. Meanwhile I am having great discussions with M&S complaints and M&S Energy complaints.

I have been with M & S since I got a fixed deal in Nov 2013. That deal came to an end in Dec 2014. I am looking at other options now just because they unfortunately can't make me a worthwhile offer. The only fix offered would be expensive for me due to standing charges (I have low consumption). It is a pity because I don't actually want to move. Their customer service has been good. All bills have arrived on time and I have not had to chase them up. They are under SSE and I was previously with SSE (Atlantic).
My only criticism is that I didn't qualify for the promised M & S vouchers when I started. I was wrongly told that I would get them. When they realised their error, they did credit my account with a partial refund.
  • According to electricityinfo.org, only 37% of M&S Energy's electricity is generated from renewable sources, while coal and gas account for 31% and 27% of its electricity.

That doesn't sound like 100% renewable to me. So why does M&S Energy appear in the Cheap Energy Club's list of 100% renewables? It's because M&S Energy say the amount of electricity their customers use is 'matched' by an equivalent amount of electricity which was generated from renewable sources. Here's what M&S Energy say:

"The electricity consumed by M&S Energy customers is matched by electricity that has the Renewable Electricity Guarantee of Origin (REGO). The annual consumption of electricity used by M&S Energy customers is matched with the equivalent amount of electricity generated from large scale hydro sources input to the National Grid."

It doesn't make a whole load of sense. Aside from the practical opacity like 'who is responsible for the generation of the 'matched' renewable energy and which electricity suppliers benefit from this?' there is also the little issue of generating renewable energy depending of M&S Energy's customers using more, non-renewable, energy in the first place. That, of course, is completely illogical and not environmentally beneficial.

I think it would be best if the Cheap Energy Club only reported genuinely 100% renewable energy tariffs on its '100% renewable' tab. That would help avoid confusion and redduce the promotion of non-renewable energy suppliers.
