I sometimes find it difficult replying in The Arms because the threads have normally descended into some off topic jocularity that you need to be a part of to understand... it's just not always easy to become one of the regulars in order to understand.

To be honest, a lot of us don't understand all the jokes and comments in the Arms. Often it's a private joke between a few posters that take a thread off topic but it's the same kind of thing that happens on Old Style. That's why you feel so comfortable on here, because you all understand each others comments and references and conversation can flow.

Please don't make out that in the Arms we are all an uncaring bunch that are always messing about. There have been members that have come into the Arms for advice when terrible things have been happening in their lives and gone away feeling better for some support. We are after all all the same people.

Jay-Jay I'm sorry if it came out that way, I didn't mean it to, it's just that some people are comfortable in the 'Pub' and some more comfortable chatting over the fence :D

    Hi all

Just found this thread and would like to add a little of my own thoughts (I haven't read Queenie's original post, nor the WHOLE thread in minute detail, so please accept my apologies if I am repeating anyone else's opinion inadvertently).

Chatting and even 'digressing' is a very Old Style, time-honoured pastime. Even if we do it in our posts and go slightly 'off the subject' on occasions, why not?

In old times people used to gather and do useful work (spin wool, shell beans, you name it... ) and chat with each other all the way through.

In these days, we work in front of computer screens and are frowned upon by our bosses if we speak with our colleagues. So we become isolated and lose a sense of belonging and community. This is the 'modern' way.

What I am trying to say is: a bit of chatting and diverting from formal rules and regulations is not a always a bad thing, it is good for mental health and it saves us a fortune in psychiatrists bills! So if someone starts a thread, say, on how to mend a dress, and it gets diverted on other topics, these topics can lead to other interesting ideas and views being offered by our members! If a bit of laughing and joking is then introduced, provided it is all nice clean fun, why not? Even better!

I am rambling I know, but just wanted to say how much fun it is to post and read posts on this forum and what a shame it would be if we made it more formal!

    Love to all

    Caterina

I didn't mean it like that so sorry if you've taken it that way... if you look at my join date etc. then you'll see I'm new and I was just meaning that from my experience on other forums I can see how it is daunting for people to move to new boards as they already have established 'regulars' who all know each other... it's easy for newcomers to be overlooked by accident as the conversation swirls over them.

I'm not sure if you noticed in my original post but I said that I feel 'relatively' comfortable posting on the other boards but my main discomfort is when it comes to posting on The Arms due to the threads I've gone to post in not being on topic when I've gone to post in them, that's just me personally... I'm certainly not part of an established group on here which makes me feel comfortable just posting in one place.

I think part of the reason I, personally, feel more comfortable posting on the other boards is because I don't have to be one of the regulars in order to tell someone where the best deal can be found or to give someone a tip... in The Arms it's more chatty so familiarity with others provides a more comfortable environment.

Yes Tiff i am here, please dont blame me for the moved posts. I received a complaint yesterday about several of the posts made in the OldStyle board. It was suggested to me that they didnt find the board welcoming and was a 'board within itself'. There were several posts that were suggested as being suitable elsewhere. So i moved them. I am not saying i agreed, but i moved them anyway.

    I dont blame you LOL

I'm surprised that someone finds this board unwelcoming as we've had quite a lot of new members join lately and their first post has started with "you are such a friendly lot" or words to that effect.
