It wasn't just about my post - but overall!!

Magentasue - I didn't read your post as "critical", but it does highlight, especially in light of the thread tiff and Lillibet linked to, that there is some confusion over what is appropriate and what is not.

I do not think the name itself should alter - perhaps the "description" should be altered accordingly. "Old style" clearly isn't just about wartime rationing, yet that is the fundamental description, well that and vinegar! Naturally this can cause confusion when other items also slot into old style living on a budget! Old style living is also about environmental issues too; yes this also has to do with money saving because ultimately if we don't recycle more the cost to individuals to dispose of their rubbish is going to escalate!

I happily pop into other areas of the site ..... when I feel there is a subject there which interests me or that I feel I have something to contribute.

I wasn't aware that the topic had been raised before, but, in light of the fact that 4 short months later it has once again caused confusion and been raised again doesn't make it a bad thing, or even a taboo subject. It simply implies that as the site gets busier perhaps more clarity is needed? Not simply for those who post but also for those who are making the decision to move any threads in the first instance.

I think we're all sensible enough to know that if we have a question re our electricity supplier then we would go to the utilities board, if we suddenly find £20,000 landing in our laps we would go to the investments board rather than ask which slow cooker to invest it in.

I popped my head into the online voucher board the other day to ask if anyone had a voucher I needed to buy my little girls car seat. We don't stagnate here, but I like the reassurance that if I ask a question here I am going to get a down to earth 'old style' answer with a lot of support alongside.

To be honest, I have posted elsewhere on here and and once got so flamed that I nearly left, then I discovered 'old style' and immediately felt at home. Math's coffee morning analogie is perfect for this place :D

I think with all forums people just feel more comfortable talking to a certain group of people after a while... it's fine when you're an established member of the forums and most people know you but when you're new (to either the forum or the specific board) it becomes more difficult to engage in certain conversations as things like 'in jokes' can crop up and you can feel totally left out of it etc.

I'm new to these forums and I feel relatively comfortable posting on most of the boards but I have to say that I sometimes find it difficult replying in The Arms because the threads have normally descended into some off topic jocularity that you need to be a part of to understand... it's just not always easy to become one of the regulars in order to understand.

Where's Judi? Is she the board guide for Old Style?
Yes Tiff i am here, please dont blame me for the moved posts. I received a complaint yesterday about several of the posts made in the OldStyle board. It was suggested to me that they didnt find the board welcoming and was a 'board within itself'. There were several posts that were suggested as being suitable elsewhere. So i moved them. I am not saying i agreed, but i moved them anyway.

For what it is worth I simply think that the board title is rubbish. I only visited here by accident because I misclicked, and managed to find lots of threads about food and cooking that I am really interested in.

I reckon the forums ought to be organised something like this:

Home Work & Play (an unpostable forum heading with the following sub-forums):

DIY Moneysaving (replaces in my home)
Electricals and appliances moneysaving (replaces in my home)
Shopping, cooking, cleaning and other domestic moneysaving (replaces moneysaving old style)

The titles are rubbish, but I hope you get my drift. There is nothing wrong with WWII style moneysaving tips but they would fit perfectly into the last forum, alongside the cooking, shopping, recipes etc etc.

You could even put the electricity, phone, water etc etc in there as sub-forums under the main "Home work & Play" heading.

At the very least the current forum title puts people off. It certainly put me off for long enough.

Finally, please note that board guides do make mistakes occasionally, but correcting them is sometimes a right pain in the ar5e. I am the BG for the pensions board so I have first hand experience of this.

    Pal

P.s. my preferred name for the board would be "Women's moneysaving - Running the house on your weekly allowance: How to avoid upsetting your husband by asking for more money before Friday has arrived."

'Old Style' is a lovely comfy place to be it would be a shame if people didn't venture out occasionaly,

But I'm agoraphobic and don't like leaving my comfy, familiar spot unless I really, really have to ;)

To be serious though, I did find it a bit of a shock yesterday to suddenly be thrust onto another board amongst unfamiliar people, even though I noticed some were regulars from here too, and one where I hadn't even previously lurked to test the water so to speak. It's also hard to keep track of threads when they are moved from board to board, and I have enough problems keeping up with various threads I'm involved in elsewhere on the site LOL!

I haven't been a member of MSE very long (although to look at my post count you wouldn't think so :o ) so I'm still pretty much finding my feet around the various boards, and I do look and post to others sometimes too, but it's here on Old Style that I feel most at home and comfortable. I think MATH hit the nail on the head about it feeling more like a social group, which I guess also occurs in the Arms too, and maybe one day I might be found regularly propping up the bar, but in my own time please :D

I'm also probably one of the biggest culprits for thread drift and chatting (sorry :o ) so maybe some sort of clarification would be helpful as to what we can and can't post here so we don't come up against this over and over
